Love Island sparks hundreds of Ofcom complaints as villa turns on Ron and ‘bullies’ him

ITV’s Love Island was hit with hundreds of angry Ofcom complaints after viewers argued that Ron Hall was being bullied by his fellow islanders.

Ron has not had the easiest time in the South African villa after first being slammed for not committing to Lana Jenkins and “playing a game.”

Following Casa Amor, Lana and Ron stayed loyal and soon made things official as they took the next steps in their relationship.

But in recent episodes, Ron has again clashed with his fellow islanders, with Shaq Muhammad claiming that Ron only picked Lana because everyone loves her.

In fresh drama that had been building for a week, Ron challenged the idea that he’d been playing a game in the hopes of winning the cash prize in next week’s finale.

Sunday’s episode saw 245 complaints lodged with the broadcast regulator, with a further 57 the following day over the alleged “bullying” of Ron.

Fans also shared their thoughts online, with one penning: “I actually dislike every girl and boy in love island now except Ron, Lana, Kai and Sanam, coming across as mega bully b*****s.”

“I’m not a massive Ron fan, but the way he’s been treated and left out almost this whole season is so upsetting tbh #loveisland i feel so bad for him tbh. this season is fully of bullies (except Sanam and Kai),” another said, with someone else adding, “Love island is whack. Tom got involved and convinced Lana to pick Casey instead of Ron. He Avoided all the hate because he ‘looking out for her’. Ron does the same thing but even milder for Rosie and suddenly the entire villa wants to bully him.”

During a challenge over the weekend, which was arguably when the drama began, Ron said he could understand if people thought he and Lana were “cruising.”

“I can see why people probably thought, ‘Oh Lana and Ron are just cruising through.’ I’m not bothered by any of that,” he said at the time. “As I know I’m not, otherwise I never would have made her my girlfriend, it means too much to me.”

Tom Clare’s official girlfriend, Samie Elishi, mistook Ron’s statement as an admission of game playing, which, through a game of Chinese whispers, spread throughout the villa.

Addressing the drama, Ron scathed: “I’m not going to lie, I’m quite livid, I’m just not going to have it… I’m not having a whole gaff think that after one challenge I’m playing a game.

“The only way that’s being perceived is by either you or Tom going away and taking that and making out as if it was said that way.”

“All I’m saying is that's what you said and it can be perceived as weird and everyone in here has an opinion on it,” Samie hit back with, as Ron added, “If they’ve got an opinion, say it to me… Please relay your opinion on the fact you don’t think I'm game playing because I’m not having nine other people thinking I’m game playing when I’ve got my girlfriend in here and people are talking behind my back.”

Samie added: “I can’t influence nine other people's opinion, I’ve had the chat with you, whoever does think it, you need to talk directly to them. I’m not doing that, I’m not cleaning up all of that.”
