Martin Lewis' Extreme Savers viewers horrified as woman shares bizarre hack to save money on food

MARTIN Lewis' Extreme Savers viewers have been left horrified after a woman shared her bizarre hack to save money on food.

Wednesday's episode of the ITV show saw Martin meet one family who had an unconventional way of getting their groceries for less.

While some families make a point of being in the supermarket at the right time for a well stocked reduced to clear section, Yuki, 48, goes a whole step further and forages food for her family.

In fact, she does her best to avoid visiting the supermarket at all, revealing: "My passion is you don't have to spend a lot to eat really well and live like a King."

Martin revealed how Yuki forages for things like nettles, wild garlic, nuts and herbs.

Other free items she looks for in the countryside includes berries, elderflower and dandelions.

Yuki said: "When I was growing up my mum used to spot wild herbs. Since I've moved to Surrey I've got more friends who are foragers."

However, viewers were horrified at the thought of picking items from the ground which could have been urinated on by animals or even people.

Taking to Twitter, one viewer wrote: "Am I the only one who thinks about the amount of dogs and well humans that would have ahem, relieved themselves on that stuff you're foraging?"

Another tweeted: "Yeah nothing like p***y nettles to add a bit of flavour to your dinner."

Martin, 49, even commented on the practice, tweeting: "After putting this prog together, I saw & picked some wild garlic on the golf course the other day.

"Was so excited I tried it. Then remembered afterwards that I often take a 'comfort break' in the woods when playing golf. Very much wish I'd washed it first!"

Martin Lewis' Extreme Savers airs on Wednesday, May 26 at 8pm on ITV.
