Martin Lewis reveals he ‘burst into tears’ when offered This Morning job 20 years ago

Martin Lewis admitted he "burst into tears" when he was first offered his This Morning job 20 years ago.

The money saving expert, 50, appeared on Thursday's episode to celebrate the incredible milestone in his career.

This Morning showed a flashback clip of Martin's first time on the show to which Holly Willoughby pointed out he hasn't changed at all.

Recalling how he first landed his This Morning job, Martin said he had been trying to get on the show for two years but it never got to the then-editor.

However, that all changed one day when the then-editor was running late due to her child being poorly.

Martin continued: "On the way in, she was listening to that Radio 5 programme. She then called up, found out who my agent was and said: 'Would he like to come on?'

"We'd been two years trying to get on this show! So she asked me on the show and you saw that response, you [Phillip] were wonderful at the time.

"They told me afterwards, we bust the phonelines with so many callers coming through because no one had ever done it before.

"I went home after that, four hours later I got the call: 'We'd like you on every week' and I burst into tears! And I'm here 20 years later…"

It comes as Martin was hailed a "national hero" as he won the National Television Award for Best TV Expert in October.

Collecting his prize at the ceremony at London’s OVO Wembley Arena, he said: "It’s been a pretty horrible year financially. I mean, the energy crisis has been disastrous and left many people with terrible issues and mental health problems.

"I'm afraid the next year with the mortgage problem and the knock-on to rent is going to be pretty bad. And you know what? We need somebody to get a grip on the economy and put things a little bit back."

He added that he was surprised to win the award when nominated against veteran broadcaster and environmentalist Sir David Attenborough, and also praised the other nominees, The Repair Shop’s Jay Blades and farming contractor Kaleb Cooper.

This Morning continues on weekdays at 10am on ITV.
