Netflix has done it again, introducing another original hit to their long list of successful ones. The My Unorthodox Life American TV miniseries debuted in mid-July 2021 and already has fans talking about Julia Haart and her family.
More recently, discussions have been surrounding the legitimacy of some parts of the Unorthodox series. It seems fans have noticed some contradictory conversations and scenes that don’t add up, making them wonder just how ‘fake’ this new reality series is.
‘My Unorthodox Life’ revolves around Julia Haart’s life experiences
Most notably, the new Netflix reality series represents what Haart’s life is like now as a modern Orthodox Jew who escaped the ultra-strict Orthodox Jewish community and ran away from her husband. She regularly emphasizes her discomfort with the restrictions and limitations set upon women during her upbringing and wants much better and much more for her children. Today, Haart is a fashion designer and entrepreneur, acting as the CEO of Elite World Group, which she co-owns with her husband, Silvio Scaglia Haart.
In a virtual interview featured on The View YouTube channel, Haart dives into what the show means to her and her family’s intentions with the series. “It isn’t about Judaism. It isn’t about Orthodoxy. It isn’t about any religion. It’s about equality and freedom. It’s about asking for the same rules that apply to men to apply to women. If a man can divorce a woman, a woman should be able to divorce a man,” Haart explains. “On the flip side of my side, of course, it’s something that concerns me. It’s something we talk about a lot because the one thing I’m afraid of is that someone will come between us.”
Regarding her new reality show, the fashion entrepreneur adds, “We are on a mission. I want to create an army of financially independent women, and my children are here to support this mission. We’re all on this mission together.”
Some scenes in ‘My Unorthodox Life’ feel scripted to fans
With a series that involves things like Paris Fashion Week, it’s only a matter of time before viewers start to question its authenticity. Many events in reality TV strain credulity, but a few moments in My Unorthodox Life break the suspension of disbelief for many watchers. Fans were particularly setback by the scene of Julia asking her husband if she could wear pants. As it turns out, fans found it to be one of many ‘scripted’ scenes since some people recount previously seeing Haart in pants on Instagram, according to Twitter.
The truth is, these speculations don’t necessarily mean the family isn’t authentic. In fact, we would go as far as to say it isn’t scripted at all — just planned. The Cinemaholic points out that entertainment timing is everything for audience engagement, but it doesn’t mean the series is scripted or fake.
“A few examples of this are the simple arrangement of clips between Julia and her talent while discussing empowerment, abuse, business aims, and marketing tactics or using different kinds of music to indicate the contrast between dramatic and happy scenes,” the magazine explains. “But again, that’s not scripted; that’s post-production magic.”
Haart responds to the series and the potential for a Season 2
As she has said many times since Netflix premiered My Unorthodox Life, Haart is proud of the show and hopes it makes a great difference for all the women who watch it. “Knowing that there’s something you want to do because you feel that it’s the right thing, and you need to share your story with the world because, hopefully, you can inspire others doesn’t mean it’s easy to do, right?” Julia told Women’s Health in an interview. “So, it’s something I felt I had to do. I felt it was my responsibility to do.”
As for whether there will be a Season 2 or not, there haven’t been any announcements or confirmations yet. However, the Haart family will likely be interested, considering Julia Haart feels so passionately about the message it gives.
