The second NCIS spin-off has also come to an end after its seventh season of CBS. Sydney Halliday star Riann Steele was sadly dealt another blow this week after NBC confirmed they had passed on a second season of their new science fiction drama, Debris.
Riann Steele’s brand new series for NBC, Debris, has just been cancelled after wrapping up its first season on Monday, March 24.
Steele starred as Finola Jones, an MI6 agent tasked with investigating the remnants of a mysterious alien spacecraft that had landed across the globe.
Despite the intriguing premise, Debris was nowhere to be found on NBC’s latest list of returning and new series for 2021-22.
Good Girls, Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, Manifest and Ellen’s Game of Games were also on the list of shows getting the axe from the network this month.
Debris became the first NBC pilot to go to series in 2020, and kicked off with the intriguing premiere last March.
Pulling in favourable reviews from critics, the new sci-fi mystery failed to perform well enough in the ratings to warrant another outing.
The series came from the mind of J.H. Wyman, the creator of other sci-fi hits such as Fringe and Almost Human on Fox.
Also known for her roles on Doctor Who, Misfits and Lovesick, Steele co-starred with American actor Jonathan Tucker as two agents from different continents investigating a supernatural mystery.
Creator and executive producer Wyman took the news in his stride as he raised hopes for the series to potentially continue elsewhere.
He told Deadline: “If the worst case is to happen, that they decide that they weren’t going to continue this, I would look for other avenues to continue telling this story.
“Because I think that the story itself is really a story worth writing about.”
He also confirmed that there is still plenty more story to tell after Debris’ intriguing series finale, ‘Celestial Body’.

Whether or not he means to shop around the second season to another network has yet to be confirmed.
The 13-episode run was no crowd-pleaser, but managed to achieve a respectable 72 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes and was generally well received from its limited pool of fans.
Sadly, Debris proved a middling performer for NBC, who felt the ratings for the first season weren’t strong enough to risk a second instalment.
The news was yet another blow for former NCIS star Steele, who appeared in four episodes of NCIS: New Orleans in 2018.
Although she hadn’t appeared in the series for over three years, any chances of reprising her role have since been quashed by the spin-off’s unexpected cancellation.
Thankfully for NCIS fans, the series will soon be replaced by yet another offshoot, NCIS: Hawaii, starring Vanessa Lachey.
Fans of Steele’s previous work can also catch her in the latest season of The Magicians on Syfy, and she has also appeared in the popular Vampire Diaries sequel, Legacies.
NCIS: New Orleans is available to watch on CBS.
