NCIS is a show with a long history and a longer list of iconic cast members. Emily Wickersham is one of them, with eight years starring in the show, she has been a fan favourite and staple of the series. Wickersham recently confirmed she was leaving the show, but why has she decided to exit the series?
Why is Emily Wickersham leaving NCIS?
Emily Wickersham is leaving NCIS after eight years playing the character of Ellie Bishop.
Wickersham made the announcement on her Instagram account, where she revealed to fans that she was “hangin this hat and jacket up. What a great ride it’s been.” [Sic]
The post was captioned saying: “This cast, this crew, are top notch. I can’t say enough kind words about this group that I’ve had the pleasure of working with for close to 8 years now and 172 episodes later.
“This business is finicky and weird and consistency is a rarity. I’ve been lucky enough to be a part of a show where I got to show up and act and laugh and learn with wonderful people.”
Wickersham’s Ellie Bishop has worked her way up to being one of the most important characters in the series.
It isn’t exactly clear why the actress has decided to depart the series, though it is likely due to her realising Ellie Bishop has run her course over the series.
Originally introduced in season 11 during a three-part episode arc where she played an NSA Analyst, she was quickly promoted to the NCIS and joined the regular team.
Most fans have been hoping for a final closure on the will they, won’t they romance between Ellie and Nick Torres (played by Wilmer Valderrama).
Things seemed to be gearing up for the pair to finally get together, as during the season 18 finale they finally kissed.
The door seems to have closed on the relationship, however, now that Ellie Bishop is out of the next season of the series.
In the series, the explanation for her absence is a simple one as she has to leave the NCIS for an indefinite amount of time.
Ellie Bishop is purposely implicated in an NSA document leak to aid her in an ongoing undercover operation as a “disgraced NCIS agent.”
Fans were still expecting Bishop to appear in another season of the series, however, especially after it was confirmed that Mark Harmon was returning as Special Agent Gibbs.
It was rumoured for many months that Harmon could be finally leaving the show, but it appeared CBS risked ending the show for good if he decided to leave.
It now seems clear that it was Emily Wickersham that was considering making the move away from the show.
The star has not confirmed any other upcoming projects at this time so it is unknown if she decided to leave due to scheduling conflicts with another series or film.
Wickersham can also be seen in NCIS: New Orleans where she made a brief cameo back in 2016 during the episode “Sister City: Part II.”
She has also appeared in the films Glitch, Gone, I Am Number Four and even had a recurring role in The Sopranos as Rhiannon Flammer.
Fans were quick to react to Wickersham’s post on Instagram with it already receiving over 70,000 liked and 3,000 comments.
One fan wrote: “Nooooooo! Your character has grown so much from the days of eating chips on the floor!”
Another fan added: “Going to miss you so much it truly won’t be the same without Ellie. Thank you for all the work you’ve put in to this character over the years. We’ll never forget.”
Fans are clearly disappointed over the news, with many hoping Ellie Bishop would see more storylines in many seasons to come.
A third fan said: “quite the unsatisfying end to your characters arc, great acting tho. “
NCIS is available to watch weekly on CBS.
