Obsession – Official Trailer
Obsession has finally come out in full on Netflix this morning, Thursday, April 13, with all four episodes ready to watch in one go. Starring the likes of Richard Armitage and Charlie Murphy, the thriller sees a father become addicted to his son’s girlfriend, craving her attention whenever they are able to have a secret moment alone together. Creator Morgan Lloyd Malcolm has explained that even though the series is based on the 1990s book Damage by Josephine Hart, the Netflix series doesn’t strictly stick to its original plot.
WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Obsession.
Thriller Obsession sees successful surgeon and family man William (played by Richard Armitage) meet his son Jay’s (Rish Shah) girlfriend Anna Barton (Charlie Murphy) for the first time at a party.
There is instant chemistry there, despite the fact they are both aware of their connection to Jay.
Lingering looks and seemingly unnoticeable brushes of their hands get too much and they arrange to meet at the flat that Anna is house-sitting for her friend.
This marks the beginning of their steamy affair with William’s obsession with Anna increasing every time they meet.
Despite the story being told in both book and film form, creator Morgan Lloyd Malcolm tried to not let their versions over the Netflix series.
In fact, she considered changing the ending altogether on multiple occasions in the process.
Speaking to Express.co.uk and other press at the premiere, Lloyd Malcolm explained: “I always have the through line in my head of where everyone is heading to, but you also do have to think about what each chunk is going to do and where we’re going to lead up to in terms of each episode.
“In terms of the through line, you’ve always got that endpoint in your head and you’ve just got to try and figure out how to flow your way there.
“I know where I’m going…we have so many conversations about that and have a hope for where it’s going and that endlessly changes.
“The ending did change quite a few times but the heart of it is always the through line.
“The heart of the characters and where they’re headed and everything else is a massive conversation.”
Obsession ultimately had a very similar conclusion to that of Damage’s book and subsequent movie.

Once again, Will and Anna secretly meet at the flat but Jay has grown suspicious of his other half and decides to follow her.
It is here that Jay discovers her having sex with his dad.
Heartbroken, he goes to leave the flat, but slips and falls over the balcony to his death.
Stunned, Will runs down the stairs naked to reach his son and sobs as he cradles his body.
Ingrid (Indira Varma) is distraught as she finds out what happened regarding her son’s death and the affair.
The family attend the funeral and Ingrid cannot bear to look at her husband, telling him he should have killed himself.
Despite everything that has happened, William still wants to be with Anna but she puts an end to their relationship, leaving him devastated.
Obsession is available to watch on Netflix.
