[Spoiler alert: The following article contains spoilers about the movie Enchanted.]
Patrick Dempsey played a lawyer in ‘Enchanted’
It’s been 14 years since Dempsey starred in Enchanted alongside Amy Adams, James Marsden, and Idina Menzel. He played Robert Philip, a single father and a lawyer, who meets Giselle (Adams) in New York City after she’s been sent there by an evil queen (Susan Sarandon).
Over the course of the film, Giselle and Robert fall in love. By the end, Giselle doesn’t marry her fairy-tale prince Edward (Marsden). Instead, she ends up with her true love, Robert, and the two live happily ever after.
The Robert Philip actor says he’s ‘never ever sung publicly’
Dempsey is singing in Enchanted 2. As he told Variety in an April 2021 interview, this will be a first for him.
“I will be singing for the first time,” he said. “I’ve never ever sung publicly — for a reason. So bear with me.”
“I hope the fans embrace it,” he added.
Asked to give details on his vocal and dance training for the film, the actor said the people behind the movie have “set” him “up for success. What else did Dempsey say about the musical numbers?
“The lyrics are really fun,” he said. “The numbers have really great choreography. And the premise is going to be interesting.”
As for whether or not he’ll be singing with Menzel, a Tony Award winner and Broadway star, Dempsey said it won’t be happening.
The ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ alum says ‘Enchanted 2’ is ‘not a typical Disney movie’
Many of the details on Disenchanted haven’t been released yet. The film is still in the early stages and will reportedly follow Giselle as she questions her happily ever after. Along the way, Giselle accidentally triggers events that turn life upside down in New York City and the fairy-tale world of Andalasia.
The Enchanted sequel is slated for a 2022 Disney+ release. Not much else is known about the second installment but Dempsey’s letting fans in on how he would describe Disenchanted.
He called it a “satire” in his Variety interview before saying it’s unlike other Disney films. “It’s not a typical Disney movie,” he said. “It’s kind of off-brand a little bit. Yet we give honor to all of those Disney movies that have come before and they finally now have figured it out. And we’re old enough, so it’s like a midlife crisis movie.”
Fans can expect more details on Disenchanted to be released throughout the year. In the meantime, fans can rent the original. At the time of publication, Enchanted isn’t streaming on Disney+.
