Paul Foreman (Peter Ash) was full of hope in Monday’s (May 22) edition of Coronation Street as he took to the internet to try and find information about motor neurone disease trial drugs.
Paul received his diagnosis in a recent episode of the ITV soap and so far, has only told Dee-Dee (Channique Sterling-Brown).
She has been a pillar of support for her friend but ultimately, Dee-Dee knows that Paul needs to face his reality and build up the courage to tell his friends and family, rather than distracting himself.
Paul headed to the hospital in tonight’s episode to speak to someone about the possibility of joining a trial.
The nurse explained that the drug Paul had mentioned only helps a small percentage of people with MND and while that could be Paul, he didn’t exactly offer any hope.
Feeling defeated, Paul headed home and later, back at the flat, Billy (Daniel Brocklebank) put forward the idea of them having children.
Of course, the couple are Summer’s (Harriet Bibby) guardians, but Billy mentioned that once Summer starts her own life, they’ll have an empty nest.
As Billy sat with a smile on his face, thinking about his future with his partner and adopting a child, Paul slowly started to become tearful.
Paul snapped and then agreed to the idea but dashed out of the flat shortly after, heading outside in tears as reality hit him that once he tells Billy about his MND, looking after a child will be the last thing on their mind.
The time will eventually come for Paul to tell Billy and the rest of his loved ones about his diagnosis, but how will his twin – Gemma – react?
‘She’s going to be completely devastated’, Dolly-Rose Campbell told us, revealing Gemma’s reaction to the news.
‘They’re not just brother and sister, they’re twins, they’ve been together their whole lives. I think her approach would be to stay strong, they are a bit of an out-there family, but they do love each other, they stick together, and they want what’s best for each other.
‘Paul is very stubborn, and he wants everything to be his way’, she added, explaining why Gemma is yet to realise something is wrong with her brother.
‘He doesn’t want to be seen as weak; he doesn’t want to off load it all on the family. He’s doing a good job of hiding it but on top of that Gemma’s life is so hectic with her family and her work and all her worries that I don’t think it’s just the wedding as to why she wouldn’t notice. Her life in general is so busy, so noticing even things right in front of her she probably struggles with.’
