Princess Diana’s former butler, Paul Burrell made an appearance on GB News to condemn Netflix’s hit drama, The Crown. Speaking to presenter Dan Wootton, Paul insisted the royal didn’t vote to abolish the monarchy.

Since The Crown first premiered in 2016, the drama has come under scrutiny from royal experts and historians for its depiction of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign.

The announcement for season five accelerated fury as it covered the 1990s, which was dubbed the Royal Family’s “most difficult and turbulent decade”.

More recently The Crown received criticism from Paul Burrell who worked as a butler for Princess Diana, he said: “I think this whole series is distasteful, cruel and inaccurate.

“I stood beside the Queen for 11 years, and with Diana for over 10 and I’m finding it very difficult to find anything truthful in this series.”

He told Dan Wootton: “It’s altering people’s perception towards the Royal Family and the Princess particularly.

“I’ve watched every episode and in the final episode, you see Princess Diana, voting to abolish the monarchy in a national debate with Trevor McDonald. That did not happen.

“Why would a woman who loved being a Royal, and who was very proud of being a member of the Royal Family want to tear down that institution?

“It doesn’t make any sense. That is not true. That is not who Diana was.”

Paul continued: “Incidentally in The Crown, you never see any of the good works which the Princess did.

“You don’t see the landmines campaign. You don’t see her tireless work with HIV and AIDS.

“You don’t see any homeless activity, nothing, nothing like that. Nothing in support of the Princess.

“It seems to me that they wanted to portray this lonely, isolated woman just constantly moaning about her life.”

During the GB news interview, he added: “The two most important people in her life were her boys and she adored her boys.

“But you know what she did? She gave them up so unselfishly to the Royal Family.

“She once said to me, ‘Well, they belong to the family, don’t they? They need to learn the ropes of their future lives.

“‘They need to be with that grandmother, and they need to be with their cousins and everyone else.’”

Paul remarked: “That’s how unselfish she was, she had a great relationship with both her boys. This is a cruel portrayal of Princess Diana’s character.”

Netflix has defended its position on portraying the royals, having released a statement clarifying it is a fictional dramatisation of real events.

The statement read: “The Crown has always been presented as a drama based on historical events.

“Series five is a fictional dramatisation, imagining what could have happened behind closed doors during a significant decade for the Royal Family – one that has already been scrutinised and well-documented by journalists, biographers and historians.”

Dan Wootton Tonight airs on weeknights on GB News at 9pm.
