This Morning chef Phil Vickery made an awkward slip-up on Thursday's show when he momentarily forgot that Fern Britton was no longer his wife.

He was married to the former This Morning host for 20 years until they divorced last year, so it's easy to see how Phil was in the habit of calling her his wife.

As the TV chef began his segment on making the perfect trifle, he introduced his recipe by talking about whether jelly should ever be included and said it had been a controversial subject during his marriage.

He said: "I love trifle in any shape or form but there's something quite nice about having a summer theme, and Pimms is one of those things…

"To me, it's very simple, it's sponge with jam, no jelly, absolutely no jelly – that caused a lot of consternation in the family. My wife – my ex-wife didn't like that, I should say."

Phil, 60, quickly glossed over the blunder as he continued with his recipe – made to his own liking of not including jelly.

After their split last year, Fern, 63 told Weekend magazine: "We had a wonderful time. We were the best of friends. And I miss that friendship.

"There comes a point when the children are substantially off your hands and you look at each other and wonder where you're going to go from here.

"I took a long time to make my decision yet I have faith that it's going to be alright. Now I'm looking forward to the last third of my adult life."

Fern presented This Morning alongside Phillip Schofield from 2002 to 2009, but the pair's friendship soured after she left, reportedly sparked by a row over an on-air disagreement.

In 2013, Phil, who now co-hosts with Holly Willoughby, told Heat magazine that they hadn't stayed in touch.

Asked whether he still spoke to Fern, he said: "No, not really. We were involved in the show and mates at the time, but we don't really. I see Phil [Vickery] when he's in This Morning… But we're not in touch now."
