Prince Harry has since addressed the fallout from his decision to wear a Nazi uniform to a party in the Netflix documentary, Harry & Meghan. His candid account came as he reflected on his own “unconscious bias” when it came to race as he and his wife Meghan Markle addressed the headlines she faced when she married into the Royal Family.

Harry opened the discussion after the controversial wearing of a “racist” brooch by Princess Michael of Kent at a royal dinner was brought up.

“The thing with unconscious bias is that it’s actually no one’s fault,” Harry weighed in.

He continued: “But once it’s been pointed out or identified within yourself, you then need to make it right.

“It’s education. It’s awareness. And it’s a constant work in progress for everybody, including me, you know.”

Soon after, the documentary shifted its focus to Harry’s Nazi uniform.

News clippings and reports from 2005 played in the documentary as the incident was revisited.

Speaking to the camera, Harry said: “It was probably one of the biggest mistakes of my life.

“I felt so ashamed afterwards. All I wanted to do was make it right.

“We sat down and spoke to the chief Rabbi in London which had a profound impact on me.

“I went to Berlin and spoke to a Holocaust survivor. I could’ve just ignored it and probably made the same mistakes over and over again in my life.

“But I learned from that,” Harry added as he took a moment to take a breath.

Soon after, Misan Harriman, one of Harry’s friends and the Chair of Southbank Centre London, shared his perspective.

He said: “Harry, he was not too dissimilar to a lot of boys I went to school with.

“You know, they were in an echo chamber of absolute privilege that afforded them to live a very particular life.

“And once you step out of that, you realize there’s a much bigger world.”

The documentary then rolled on to delve into Harry’s decade-long stint in the army.

At the time Harry said in a statement, he was “very sorry if I caused any offence or embarrassment to anyone”.

The young royal added: “It was a poor choice of costume and I apologise.”

A spokesman for the Board of Deputies of British Jews branded the costume as “clearly in bad taste, especially in the run-up to Holocaust Memorial Day”.

But they added: “The board is pleased that he’s apologised for the incident.”

Harry & Meghan part 1 is available to stream on Netflix now. Part 2 premieres on Thursday, December 15.
