Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly were joined by Alan Partridge (played by Steve Coogan) on this weekend’s instalment of the ITV show Saturday Night Takeaway. Alan Partridge is a fictional broadcaster who first appeared in 1991. Taking up residency on ITV as the guest announcer, fans took to social media to share their thoughts on the comedian.

For the penultimate episode of the eighteenth season of the competition show, the presenting duo pulled out all the stops.

Stephen Mulhern returned to the show to perform “on-air dares” with some of the BBC One radio team, Boy George and the Culture Club did some karaoke with viewers at home while George Ezra performed at the end of the show with Ant and Dec.

Starting off the show with a comedy skit, Ant, Dec and Alan joked about what was in store for the studio audience.

However, his comedy stylings and banter with the hosts divided viewers of the show.

Carole Carter tweeted: “I absolutely cannot bear Alan Partridge.

“I’ve just tried to watch, and I’m going to have to turn it off, I’m afraid.

“Sorry @antanddec @ITV #SaturdayNightTakeaway.”

Anthony Shannon felt the same and said: “Huge fan of Steve Coogan, but never got the fascination with Alan Partridge.

“A character that just never makes me laugh.

“Star guest announcer on @itvtakeaway & I’m guessing an appearance by Stephen Mulhern, going be a long f***kin show…. #SaturdayNightTakeaway.” (sic)

Echoing Anthony and Carole’s @_xFran added: “Alan Partridge being this week’s star guest announcer is going to be painful, isn’t it #SaturdayNightTakeaway.” (sic)

However, many viewers jumped to his defence.

When the show’s hosts cut to Alan in his announcer booth, he often jabbed at them that he could do better.

He also appeared to be on the phone with his agent in one segment and stated that he “needed” to get out of the studio.

At any given moment the comedian would mention his 2022 Stratagem tour and how it only had a “few” tickets left.

For the last episode in the series, Ant and Dec will be joined by comedian Lee Mack and former Strictly Come Dancing star, Oti Mabuse.

Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway concludes at 7pm on ITV on Saturday, April 9.
