There are big changes afoot at Sky, after the broadcaster announced plans to scrap Sky One as part of a major rebrand.
There are plans to shake up its TV portfolio later this year and introduce two new channels, Sky Max and Sky Showcase.
It means that Sky One will leave the schedules after 40 years on our screens on September 1.
Sky Showcase will pull together highlights from across Sky’s channels and fill Sky One’s 106 slot. Sky Max, which will also be available on demand, will become the place to watch Sky original dramas and other original shows.
Sky Showcase will ‘curate a selection of the best TV shows from across Sky’s portfolio of entertainment brands’ and feature shows from the likes of Sky Witness, Sky Documentaries, Sky Crime, Sky Nature, Sky Arts, Sky Max, Sky Comedy, Sky History, Sky Kids, SyFy and E!.
The changes will be made at no extra charge to customers and coincide with the launch of the rebooted Never Mind the Buzzcocks.
‘Sky One had a brilliant year, from A Discovery of Witches at the beginning of the year to Flight Attendant to the Friends Reunion so we know that it’s in rude health content wise – but I think it is time for a reset,’ Sky’s Director of Programmes for UK & Ireland James Morris told RadioTimes.com.
‘Sky One means many things to many people and we didn’t want to change what it meant, we kind of felt we wanted to go into this new direction.’
He added: ‘We just want to be really clear to our customers and allow those really big content pieces to be easier than ever to find and we think Sky Showcase, sat side by side with the rest of the key content, will make those shows shine even greater.’
In the meantime, Sky Comedy and Sky Atlantic will remain unchanged.
One of the first shows to watch on Sky Max will be the previously announced Never Mind the Buzzcocks. Noel Fielding will be stepping back into his role as team captain for the reprised comedy show, which has been commissioned for a new eight-episode series on Sky and NOW.
This Country’s Daisy May Cooper will be going head to head with the Great British Bake Off presenter, while Greg Davies has been announced as host and stand-up comic Jamali Maddix will serve as a regular guest.
