Succession’s Sarah Snook exposes key advice she’d give Shiv

Succession: Sarah Snook gives advice to her character Shiv Roy

What started as a seemingly doting husband being at the beck and call of his ambitious and career-driven wife has transformed into two people out for themselves between Shiv (played by Sarah Snook) and Tom (Matthew Macfadyen).

With just a few episodes to go in season four of HBO’s Succession, the news of Logan Roy’s (Brian Cox) death has sent shockwaves through the family, with daughter Shiv now well and truly at the centre of the action at the top of Waystar Royco.

Despite being seemingly ousted from the company by their father thanks to Tom’s meddling at the end of season three, Shiv and brothers Kendall (Jeremy Strong) and Roman (Kieran Culkin) are back to their scheming ways to ensure one of them emerges at the top of the company’s hierarchy.

However, Tom’s own selfishness and ambitions of his own have laid the ground for a truly tantalising rivalry between him and his now ex-wife.

Despite all of the backstabbing, scheming and explicit blunt back-and-forths between the Roy family and Tom, however, actor Snook has explained she’d like to see Shiv be “nicer” to her former beau.

Speaking in an HBO featurette ahead of episode five of the final season, the cast was asked what advice they’d give their respective characters.

Snook divulged: “What advice would I give Shiv? So much.

“Just like relax a little you know. Don’t be searching for Daddy’s love, just love yourself.

“Try and be vulnerable (and) stop being so mean to Tom,” Snook continued.

Sadly for Snook, Shiv’s fondness of Tom shows no signs of reverting back to the time before they tied the knot.

Especially with the “old guard” of Gerri (J Smith Cameron), Frank (Peter Friedman) and co putting up obstacle after obstacle to stop any of the Roy children from taking the top spot at Waystar.

And with Tom further embedding himself into the furniture at Waystar, could he put forward a case to come out on top?

Meanwhile, Snook wasn’t the only cast member to issue words of advice for their alter egos.

Alan Ruck had a rather short and simple message for Connor Roy, saying: “Seek therapy. Talk to someone as soon as possible.”

Logan star Cox also offered up his thoughts to HBO, saying he’d tell the billionaire businessman to “ease up”.

“Logan’s Achilles heel is he loves his children and I would say love them less,” Cox went on.

Succession continues Sundays on HBO in the USA and Mondays on Sky Atlantic in the UK.
