Netflix

Choose LoveAvailable from Thursday

If you’re hankering after something a little soppy to watch, there are millions of romcoms on Netflix (at least, that’s how it feels sometimes). And on the face of it, Choose Love isn’t that different from the rest, introducing us to successful young recording engineer Cami Conway (Laura Marano), who has a great job and a sweet boyfriend but can’t help wondering if she’s making the wrong choices – especially when two other hunky fellas appear in her life. What sets Choose Love apart from the rest of a very crowded field, however, is that it’s Netflix’s first interactive romcom. Using your remote, viewers get to decide what Cami should do when she’s faced with all manner of choices, both big and small. A 21st-century twist on a tried-and-tested formula.

DisenchantmentAvailable from Friday

It’s all back to Dreamland for the fifth and final series of the magical, medieval adult animation, which follows the fantastical, anarchic adventures of reluctant princess Bean (voiced by Abbi Jacobson), her little green buddy Elfo (Nat Faxon) and her wise-cracking personal demon Luci (Eric André). The trio are on a mission to save the kingdom from the clutches of Bean’s wicked mother Queen Dagmar (Sharon Horgan) once and for all, but it promises to be highly dangerous, brilliantly daft and frequently very funny. While Disenchantment has never reached the heights of its creator Matt Groening’s most famous show – The Simpsons – it’s still a cut above most adult animations.

This motley crew – leader Monkey D. Luffy (Inaki Godoy), Nami (Emily Rudd), Roronoa Zoro (Mackenyu), Usopp (Jacob Romero) and Sanji (Taz Skylar) – hit the high seas to find a mythical treasure called the One Piece, which will make Monkey the King of the Pirates. But with the Navy on their trail and plenty of other blood-thirsty pirates trying to find the same treasure, it won’t be easy. Smart and sharp swashbuckling excitement.

Takeshi’s CastleAvailable from Wednesday

Over the years, the mayhem-packed Japanese game show Takeshi’s Castle has had more comebacks than Take That. Here comes the latest version, which will feature commentary from comedians Tom Davis and Romesh Ranganathan, a downbeat duo guaranteed to balance out the barmy, knockabout nature of the competition with some balloon-bursting British cynicism. If you’ve missed all the previous incarnations of the madcap show, here’s how it works: 100 contestants known as the Attacking Army attempt to storm Takeshi’s Castle, a wacky obstacle course filled with a series of difficult physical challenges, not to mention guards, devils and other strange characters determined to stand in their way. Those who make it through will have the chance to take on Takeshi himself and maybe win one million yen (about £5,400). Described by Amazon as “the ultimate in hangover TV”, it’s big, colourful and very, very silly.

The Wheel Of TimeAvailable from Friday

This epic drama’s fans have waited almost two years for season two – but their patience will be richly rewarded as the budget's still huge, the special effects remain jaw-dropping and the emotional stakes are high. This time, we're promised that "threats new and very old seek out the young friends from the Two Rivers, now scattered over the world". What does this mean for our hero, farm boy/The Dragon Reborn, Rand al’Thor (Josha Stradowski)? With Rosamund Pike on scene-stealing form as the mystic Moiraine Damodred, we're in for a magical adventure. A word to the wise: you’ll definitely need to have watched the first season to make any sense of what’s going on.

Women Talking Available from Monday

An incredible ensemble cast – including the likes of Claire Foy, Rooney Mara, Jessie Buckley, Ben Whishaw and Frances McDormand – shine in writer/director Sarah Polley’s Oscar-winning drama about a group of American women living in a remote Mennonite community in Bolivia. When the women of the isolated community discover that the men have been drugging them with a livestock tranquilizer and raping them, they gather together to decide what to do – stay and do nothing about what’s taken place, stay and fight, or leave. Affecting, powerful and, shockingly, based on a true story.

Jurassic PunkAvailable from Monday

What do the films Jurassic Park, The Mask, Terminator 2 and The Hunt For Red October all have in common? We’ll tell you: legendary, maverick computer animation pioneer Steve Williams worked on them all, using his skill, ingenuity and determination to create some of the most mind-blowing and realistic visual effects that cinema had ever seen, effects that would help shape the world of CGI as we know it today. This surprising feature-length documentary reveals Steve’s incredible, if chaotic, life story and the events that lead to perhaps his most iconic cinema moment: when those terrifyingly real Jurassic Park dinosaurs first walked on to the screen.

Power Book IV: ForceAvailable from Friday

We're back in Chicago for the latest instalment of this well-received third spin-off from the cult hit Power. Charismatic actor Joseph Sikora (Ozark) plays Tommy Egan, an exiled New Yorker who's on a mission to be the main man in Chicago’s drug world. But swimming in these shark-infested waters comes with a heavy cost, as Tommy's nemesis-turned-business partner Liliana learned. Now he's on a mission to avenge her death as he spots chinks in the armour of his rivals, but lethal danger is always lurking… With Power execs Courtney E. Kemp and Curtis 50 Cent Jackson on board, this is a wild, entertaining ride.

WOW Presents Plus: Drag Race BrasilAvailable from Wednesday

You may wonder why it's taken so long for Drag Race to expand into South America, but this Brazilian version was originally in the works way back in 2017. Like a caterpillar turning into a butterfly, that long metamorphosis has been worth it, as we now welcome a vibrant cast of 12 queens competing to be crowned Brazil's next drag superstar. Queen Of The Universe winner Grag Queen is on hosting duties, while comedians Dudu Bertholini and Bruna Braga are on the judging panel. Expectations among the Drag Race fandom are very high for this series, and Brazil should deliver.

ACORN TV

The Chelsea DetectiveAvailable from Monday

Adrian Scarborough (Killing Eve) is back as the houseboat-dwelling, bicycle-riding DI Max Arnold, and he has a new work partner. Vanessa Emme (Dublin Murders) joins the show as DS Layla Walsh, a plain-speaking officer from Exeter who's new to Chelsea CID. While the well-heeled residents of Chelsea may appear to be sitting pretty, they also have plenty of skeletons in their walk-in wardrobes. Across four 90-minute mysteries, the detective duo will delve into the art world, luxury retirement living, rowing, psychotherapy, tailoring and dating. With Frances Barber also back as Max's aunt Olivia, this is an amusing and reassuringly cosy crime drama.

PARAMOUNT+

Star Trek: Lower DecksAvailable from Tuesday

The Star Trek universe is now filled with all manner of epic spin-off series, providing excitement and entertainment for Trekkies of all ages. Adult animation Lower Decks, which originally launched in 2020, holds the distinction of being the franchise’s first comedy, and focuses its attention on the lives, loves and misadventures of some of Starfleet’s lowest-ranking officers, including rule-breaking human ensign Beckett Mariner (voiced by Tawny Newsome) and her staid colleague Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid). Ahead of a new fourth season, the first three series come to Paramount+ this week, promising plenty of out-of-this-world fun on board the U.S.S. Cerritos.

Le StadeAvailable from Wednesday

Following on from the feature-length documentary of the same name, which told the story of French rugby union club Stade Toulousain’s remarkable 2020-21 season – in which they won both the European Cup and the French league – here comes a four-part series focusing on the same subject. Going into more depth and paying more attention to the human side of the story, the series features interviews with the players, including captain Julien Marchand, Antoine Dupont and Romain Ntamack, not to mention manager Ugo Mola, and follows the club right up to 2023. An inspiring watch for all rugby obsessives.
