The Chase’s Paul Sinha has hit out after racist trolls flooded social media to attack the show’s diverse line-up.
On Tuesday night, Michelle from London, Salim from Manchester, Karen from Swansea, and Riaz from Solihull teamed up to take on the quizzer, also known as The Sinnerman.
All the players were non-white, which caused outrage among some online who branded the episode ‘an invasion’ and a ‘BAME special’, so much so that Paul was forced to speak out.
‘I know it’s only a sad, inadequate minority,’ he wrote. ‘But those Chase “fans” who had trouble with the ethnic make up of today’s show – the Chase was never, ever for you.’
Fellow chaser Anne Hegerty agreed, writing: ‘Depressing, isn’t it?’
Sadly, this isn’t the first time that an ITV game show has been targeted with racist remarks.
Last year, racist viewers blasted Alan Carr’s Epic Gameshow for having a ‘lack of diversity’ for welcoming an all-Black panel and even complained to the television watchdog Ofcom.
There were, however, many who defended the line-up of the episode and called out the shameful and abhorrent comments.
‘What? Why are people complaining about a black family being on Alan Carr’s game show? Not everyone’s white in this world. Also, IT. IS. A. GAME. SHOW. Why should it even matter?’ one wrote at the time.
‘Knew Alan Carr’s Epic Game show would have the fragile white people up in arms that all the contestants are black (which I think is great btw!),’ wrote one. ‘Keep it up @itv. The more we normalise this, the more we can tackle racism head on.’
The Chase airs weekdays at 5pm on ITV.
