The Crown’s Elizabeth Debicki breaks silence over Diana controversy

The Crown actor Elizabeth Debicki has spoken out about the controversy surrounding theNetflix show – saying she hopes people can ‘move on’ from it.

Elizabeth, 32, takes over the role ofPrincess Diana for the fifth season of the programme, which is set to arrive on Netflix in just a matter of days.

But the new series has already come in for criticism, with screen legendDame Judi Dench calling for a disclaimer to be added to each episode, saying it has begun to verge on “crude sensationalism”.

Sir John Major, meanwhile, is said to have described forthcoming scenes, which reportedly depict the then-Prince Charles plotting to oust the Queen, as “malicious nonsense”.

The latest trailer for The Crown now features a disclaimer saying the series is a “fictional dramatisation” and “inspired by real events” on YouTube. It is the first time one of its trailers has featured such a disclaimer.

Elizabeth, an Australian actor known for her work in the Guardians of the Galaxy films, told theRadio Times she respected “people’s points of view” about the show.

She added: “It was always very clear to me that one can never know what happens behind closed doors and that a writer is interpreting what may have happened.”

She went on: “Now the disclaimer is up there, we can maybe stop talking about it and move on.

“If that’s helpful for certain people, so be it, and now the conversation can be returned to the creative endeavour of what the show is.”

She added it was a “tricky” thing to discuss and said she wanted people to watch it and “make up their own minds”.

She also spoke of the “enormous pressure” of playing an iconic real-life figure such as Diana – adding she thought she was “completely mad” for taking on the role.

She told the Radio Times: “It feels insurmountable until the scripts get delivered to you and the entire process begins.”

Netflix has previously said The Crown has “always been presented as a drama based on historical events” – describing the show as ‘fictionalised drama’ in its press materials, on social media and on the programme’s landing page on its platform.

Cast member Sir Jonathan Pryce – who plays Prince Philip in the new series – has already spoken out to defend the show – voicing his “disappointment” at “fellow artistes” who had taken aim at the upcoming season.

On top of the controversy surrounding Season 5, critics have also blasted scenes being shot for the sixth and final season – whichrecreate Princess Diana’s funeral.

The show’s production team are also expected to recreate her final hours in Paris before the car crash that killed her at the age of 36, it has been reported.
