The Last Kingdom season four ended last year leaving fans with a long wait for the show’s return. With season five confirmed by Netflix but no word yet on when to expect it due to delays from the coronavirus pandemic, fans have been left speculating. Now many fans are wondering what happened to Uhtred’s (played by Alexander Dreymon) third child?

What really happened to Uhtred’s third child?

Season four ended with a lot of questions left unanswered and plot points hanging for fans to solve.

Having waited for a year now, fans are taking to the books the show is based on The Saxon Stories by Bernard Cornwell to try and solve the puzzles of the show.

At the end of season four, Uhtred of Bebbanburg had sacrificed much for his loyalty to the Saxons, including people close to him.

Throughout the season fans saw him trying to be a better father to his oldest son Uhtred (Finn Elliot) and Stiorra (Ruby Hartley).

Yet, Uhtred has a third child, one that was born during the first episodes of season three.

Strangely, this child has not been seen or mentioned since, leaving fans to wildly speculate over the child’s whereabouts.

According to some fans on Reddit, the answers are found in the source material and texts on the real pagan lord.

In the books, Uhtred’s third son was a fearless warrior that fought alongside his father.

Reddit user Alessia1255 said: “At the start of The Empty Throne, he is 21 and continues to fight alongside his father and helps him carry out the plan to get Aethelflaed seated as the ruler of Mercia.”

They added: “He has learned well from his father and while he patiently nods his head, it’s not unusual for him to do things his own way.

It is not unreasonable to assume then that his son is simply living a different life to his father, and that he is out there someone building his own life. However other fans have suggested he died long ago.

The executive producer of The Last Kingdom, Nigel Marchant, spoke to Radio Times and he had a different explanation for Uhtred’s son’s absence.

He said: “I think we’re always conscious about bringing in new characters – and there’s an awful lot of them within this season – and there’s a lot of younger characters coming in.

He added: “We didn’t want to cheat the audience by not meeting the characters and going on a journey with them. There’s a lot of characters in any ensemble piece and that means there’s a lot of mouths to feed for the writer.”

However, Marchant didn’t close the door on the character completely, keeping the possibility for his return in season five alive.

He explained: “We don’t like to deviate from the books, we like to keep the characters and the essence there, but sometimes it just doesn’t work. But that’s not to say that we couldn’t see them in the future.”

This suggests the fans on Reddit may be on to something by turning to the books to understand where the third son is.

The Last Kingdom is available to watch on Netflix to all subscribers for £5.99 to £13.99 per month.
