The Outlaws viewers rip into 'awful, unsatisfying finale full of loose ends'

STEPHEN Merchant's new comedy-drama The Outlaws aired for the final time on Monday night – but viewers all shared the same damning view.

After six action-packed episodes, the first season of the dark comedy wrapped up yesterday evening, however, fans were quick to complain.

Written and directed by The Office co-creator and comedian Merchant – who also stars as Greg – the show follows seven strangers who form an unlikely alliance when their community service takes a dark turn.

Despite being a hit among many, plenty of viewers have since taken to social to ridicule the ending as “unsatisfying” and “full of loose ends”.

Twitter soon became a switchboard for complaints, with one viewer fuming: “Just finished watching The Outlaws and the ending is complete and utter garbage.”

Echoing their sentiments, someone else said: “Really enjoyed The Outlaws, barring an ending which looked at all the incredibly tight corners it had written the characters into and just shrugged.”

While another penned: “The Outlaws is fantastic television, but the ending felt very unsatisfying.”

While the crime drama, which featured a star-studded cast – including Christopher Walken and Eleanor Tomlinson – will be gone from the TV for a while, a second season will be returning in 2022.

Ahead of last night’s finale, Stephen took to Twitter to say that the whole of season two has already been filmed, with fans likely to see it on their screens at “some point in the future”.

Last night’s finale made global headlines long before its terrestrial broadcast, thanks to a scene in which Walken painted over a Banksy mural created especially for the show.

The anonymous street artist, who hails fromBristol where the show is filmed, painted a rat with a can of spray paint with the words “Banksy” written above it for the series, the show has said.

In the final episode, viewers see Walken’s character Frank completing his community service by painting over graffiti.

Upon finding the artwork, he asks his probation officer Diane if he should paint over it, to which a distracted Diane explains that any graffiti must be painted over.

All six episodes of The Outlaws are available to watch now on the BBC iPlayer.
