The Railway Children Return first look as Sheridan Smith is seen in new trailer

The Railway Children Return trailer dropped on Wednesday giving fans of the classic story a first glimpse of the upcoming film along with the appearance of a recognisable face.

In the clip that has been released, Sheridan Smith is seen in the first couple of frames looking almost unrecognisable portraying character Annie in the film.

The 40 year old can be seen in the trailer sporting an retro-styled wavy auburn hairdo undeath a maroon hat, whilst wearing an orange blouse, green jacket and grey high waisted skirt.

Sheridan stars in the Studio Canal production alongside Game of Thrones actor John Bradley, as well as BAFTA & Emmy Award-winning actress Jenny Agutter, who returns to her original role as Roberta 'Bobbie' Waterbury in the film.

The Railway Children Return is the long-awaited sequel to 1970 film predecessor The Railway Children, and follows children evacuees on their journey from Salford to Yorkshire village Oakworth at the time of the second World War.

The film — which is scheduled for a 15 July release date — is not based on the classic novel and instead brings forth a new story stemming on the first film that promises to warm the hearts of viewers on the big screen.

Child actors Eden Hamilton, Beau Gadsdon and Zac Cudby will be playing the role of evacuees Pattie, Lily and Ted in the film respectively, along with new young actor Kenneth Aikens, who will be playing the part of an injured American solider.

The film tells the tale of the trio as they help the solider find his way back home, while met with hurdles along the way.

The 1906 novel Railway Children by Edith Nesbit tells the story of a mother who moves to Yorkshire with her three children after their father is wrongly sent to prison.

It has been adapted on numerous occasions becoming a classic to many over the years, with hope no doubt from the sequel’s production that this is the case for latest instalment released this summer.

The Railway Children Return was directed by Morgan Matthews, who previously directed Channel 4's My Crazy Parents and feature Beautiful Young Minds, and was shot over the course of eight weeks beginning in May 2021.

Various locations shot in the original film were used in this latest sequel including the Haworth, Oakworth Station, the Brontë Parsonage and the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway, and viewings of these will no doubt bring nostalgia to watchers on release day.
