The Repair Shop expert left speechless as guest breaks down over restoration

Guest breaks down after her grandmother’s ring is restored

The Repair Shop’s goldsmith Richard Talman was tasked with an important fix in the classic episode of the BBC show.

Michelle Hammond brought along her late grandmother’s engagement ring, which meant a lot to the family.

The emotional guest was barely able to talk as she detailed her love for her gran, and both Jay Blades and Richard were touched and determined to do the best job they could for her.

Once the ring was repaired, Michelle burst into tears as she recalled fond memories of her late relative.

Richard and Jay watched silently as the emotional reunion saw Michelle sobbing and thanking them.

“It’s an engagement ring and it belonged to my grandma,” Michelle told the two restorers when she entered the iconic barn.

She went on to explain: “So my grandma passed away in April this year. She was 99 years of age.”

“99?” Jay gasped, adding: “A proper legend, then!” Michelle agreed: “A proper legend.”

The guest continued: “So when we had to clear out her house, we were rummaging through her things and we found her engagement ring hidden away in a little teapot.

“She and my grandad got engaged after the war. They got married in 1946. She was actually engaged to someone else…”

“Hold on…” Jay interrupted as Richard laughed. Jay pressed for more details as Michelle told the story.

“Yeah, so she was engaged to someone else and she was meant to meet her current fiance at a local pub,” she explained.

“So she went to the pub but she bumped into my grandad and obviously fell in love… bit of a whirlwind.”

“Love at first sight,” Jay commented, to which Michelle nodded and responded: “And the rest is history.”

Michelle went on to explain how her grandad had died in 1991, but that he and her grandmother had remained together until then.

As he studied the ring, Richard remarked: “Ah yes, it certainly has seen better days, poor thing.

“[It’s] an indication of a lifetime’s worth of wear, probably against a wedding ring.”

After pouring hours into fixing the ring, Richard appeared nervous as Michelle arrived to collect the restored jewellery.

When Jay asked what it meant to her, she stated: “It means everything…” before turning to Richard and adding: “No pressure!”

She added: “No, it means so much, to have it back… and mended, I can’t wait to see it.”

As Richard revealed the fully restored ring to her, Michelle gasped and was immediately tearful.

“Can I have a look?” She asked as Richard simply nodded.

“That is beautiful,” she cried, picking it up and continuing: “Wow… I’m sorry, wow.”

She went on: “My god, that is so beautiful. Every Christmas when she used to come and stay with us, when we gave her a Christmas present from whoever it was, she’d always pick it up and kiss it… so you might think it’s a bit strange, but I’m just going to do that now.”

“No, it’s not strange,” Jay assured her as she kissed the ring and sobbed: “So that’s for you, gran.”

Richard remained silent and appeared very touched by the emotional display.

“Bless her, that was special,” Jay said to him after the guest had gone.

“It was… I like that,” Richard added, to which Jay replied: “Well done you.”

The Repair Shop continues on Wednesday at 8pm on BBC One.
