During Wednesday’s instalment of The Repair Shop, father and daughter Harry and Belinder entered the famous BBC barn with a rusty scooter which was crying out for the expert care of Dominic Chinea.

The dented two-wheeler was gifted to Belinda by her parents 61 years ago and she wanted her grandchildren to use it when they were old enough.

Harry was keen for the scooter to be revitalised so his great-grandchildren could continue to use the scooter down hills and around parks.

Belinda told Dominic and host Jay Blades: “Mum and dad bought it for me when I was five, so it’s 61 years old.

“I used it then my brothers did and now I have two grandchildren of my own – the eldest one is only 18 months old and I just wanted to get the scooter fixed so it would last another 60 years.”

Harry said the scooter was his legacy and his children used to freewheel as far as they could down Greenwich Park’s steep hill.

Dominic quickly got to work repairing the worse-for-wear scooter and gave it a deep clean before spray painting it bright red and piecing it back together. He had to use welds and polishes to restore the toy to its former glory.

Later on in the episode, Harry and Belinda were reacquainted with the toy and astounded at Dominic’s craftmanship before Harry insisted on taking it for a spin outside the barn.

Dominic and Belinda stood by Harry’s side and he hopped on the scooter and took it for a spin down a pathway.

As Harry picked up speed on the scooter, Dominic exclaimed: “We have to run to keep up with you.”

After the ride was over, Harry told the cameras: “I could go faster but they wouldn’t let me, they were holding on.”

Fans took to Twitter to comment on the heartwarming episode, with Andy Miller writing: “Watching a 92-year-old father see a scooter he gifted to his daughter over 60 years ago restored to look like it did when he bought it is why I love this programme. What a brilliant job he’s made of it too, not a dry eye in the house.” (sic)

Paul Speight added: “Just watched it ourselves, pure joy wasn’t it?”

Another fan remarked: “92-year-old riding a scooter on #TheRepairShop – absolute lad! Hope I’m like that when I’m (if I get to) his age.”

Steve Jordan wrote: “I just *might* have cried at the bloke with the scooter #TheRepairShop.”
