All Creatures Great and Small has been airing on Channel 5 and it has become one of the network’s most popular TV shows. The uplifting series draws inspiration from the working life of esteemed Yorkshire vet, James Herriot (played by Nicholas Ralph). Fans are keen to know when the series will be returning and Express.co.uk has all you need to know.
When is All Creatures Great and Small coming back?
The second season of All Creatures Great and Small made its debut in September 2021 and it saw James make some tough decisions.
He turned down a prestigious role in Glasgow so he could stay with his love interest Helen Alderson (Rachel Shenton).
At the end of season two, he finally plucked up the courage to propose to her and the pair celebrated their engagement.
The latest season also touched on the impending Second World War, and fans are wondering how this will impact the lives of the Darrowby residents.
As for when the series will be returning, a Christmas special has already been filmed and it will air before the end of 2021.
An official release date is yet to be announced, but the first festive special aired on December 22, 2020.
With this in mind, it is hoped the family-friendly drama will return to screens around the same time this year.
The series is yet to be renewed for a third season, but judging by its popularity, this seems like the likely route.
Each season is made up of six episodes, and it is hoped the third season will continue the trend.
However, fans have called for the seasons to be extended as they enjoy the series so much.
Both of the previous seasons have aired in September, so it is likely season three will air in September 2022.
There is no doubt the story will continue for James and Helen as the series was the highest-rated show on Channel 5 since February 2016.
A total of 3.3million viewers tuned in to the premiere and it has continued to receive critical acclaim since.
The showrunner has already teased season three is in the works, assuring fans there is plenty more to come.
Ben Vanstone said: “Yes, I think we are looking forward to a third series. I don’t think that’s a surprise.”
He added: “I think that when we started the show, we had in mind arcs for these characters that took them across a number of series and initially, it was kind of four series.
“But everything in this show plays out slower than you think it would.
“I think in other shows, you sort of risk the need to have more stories and more action and more things happening, but with our show, it’s the antithesis of that.
“We kind of give everything time. So yeah, there’s plenty more to come. We’ll see what all the stakeholders say.”
From this, it seems fans can expect at least another two seasons with James and his friends and colleagues.
Viewers have taken to Twitter to share their thoughts on the latest season and the show’s future.
