Labor expected to win Macnamara, form majority government
Labor is on track to form a majority government after late counting by the Australian Electoral Commission showed the party well in front in the key Melbourne seat of Macnamara.
Winning the seat would give Labor at least 76 seats – a majority in a 151-seat chamber – in the lower house, with a good chance of also retaining the seat of Gilmore in NSW.
Labor’s candidate for Macnamara, Josh Burns, had been in a close race against the Greens’ candidate Steph Hodgins-May and the Liberals’ Colleen Harkin since the May 21 election.

Dutton pitches to ‘forgotten’ Australians in suburbs to rebuild Liberal vote
Outer suburban voters and small business owners will be Peter Dutton’s target to rebuild the Liberal vote as the Coalition shifts away from big business in a pitch to “forgotten people” and towards what it calls sensible action on climate change after years of division.
Dutton and former environment minister Sussan Ley were yesterday elected unopposed as Liberal leader and deputy.

In his first press conference as leader, Dutton vowed he would not lead a “Labor lite” opposition, promised “sensible” action on climate change and said he was willing to talk to the federal government about a constitutionally enshrined Voice to parliament.
Dutton also distanced himself from big business as he promised to be a voice for small business owners in the suburbs.

This morning’s headlines at a glance
Good morning and thanks for your company.
It’s Tuesday, May 31. I’m Broede Carmody and I’ll be anchoring our live coverage for the first half of the day.
Here’s what you need to know before we get started.
- Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will govern in his own right. The Melbourne seat of Macnamara has been called for sitting Labor MP Josh Burns following a tight three-way contest. The announcement gives Labor 76 seats in the House of Representatives, a one-seat majority even after a speaker is appointed. Labor is also hopeful of retaining the NSW South Coast seat of Gilmore (which is still in doubt).
- New Opposition Leader Peter Dutton says he will target suburban voters and small business owners to rebuild the Liberal Party’s electoral chances in 2025. Meanwhile, deputy Liberal leader Sussan Ley has indicated that the party will review its policies for women. And Nationals leader David Littleproud has suggested his party will chase the “sensible centre”. Both Ley and Littleproud will be doing the media rounds this morning.
- And in other news, China has shelved its regional Pacific deal for now. As Eryk Bagshaw writers, China says it is willing to co-operate with Australia in the Pacific – signalling a rhetorical and diplomatic shift following the election of the Labor government.
