This morning’s headlines at a glance

Good morning and thanks for your company.

It’s Sunday, May 1. I’m Broede Carmody and I’ll be anchoring our live coverage for the first half of the day.

Here’s what you need to know before we get started.

  • Labor leader Anthony Albanese will officially launch his party’s election campaign from Perth today. The opposition is hoping to pick up two or even three seats in Western Australia due to the popularity of Labor Premier Mark McGowan. As Anthony Galloway and James Massola write, Labor says it will tackle Australia’s housing crisis by buying up to a 40 per cent stake in some private homes. The idea is to help first home buyers on low and middle incomes enter or re-enter the housing market.
  • Speaking of campaign launches, federal Treasurer Josh Frydenberg has his campaign launch today. The treasurer is fighting to retain his Melbourne seat of Kooyong. His primary challenger is the climate and integrity-focused independent Dr Monique Ryan.
  • And in other news, Prime Minister Scott Morrison is pledging to crack down on big tech. Like Labor, the Greens are also talking about housing affordability. And Finance Minister Simon Birmingham and Greens leader Adam Bandt are due to make an appearance on the ABC’s Insiders later this morning.
