Former Houston Cougars linebacker Zamar Kirven is charged with capital murder after he allegedly shot and killed two of his former high school football teammates.
Kirven allegedly shot and killed Sabion Kubitza and Jacob Ybarra early Sunday morning in Mart, Texas. The three played football for for Mart High School. The Mart School District said in a statement that it was providing counseling to anyone who needed it after the shooting.
According to the McLennan County Sheriff’s Office, the two men were asleep in the same house when they were killed while a third man was able to escape. Kirven was arrested at his parents’ house after the shooting.
“There is no concrete motive at this time,” McLennan County Sheriff Parnell McNamara told the Waco Tribune. “It is just a real sad deal.”
Kirven was dismissed from the Houston football team in 2020 after playing in three games and subsequently put his name in the transfer portal to find a new school.
He played in 20 total games over three seasons at Houston. His most productive season came in 2019 when he played in eight games and started five of them. Kirven had 28 tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss in 2019 and had an interception against Memphis.
Kirven was a two-star recruit out of Mart, where he had over 100 tackles as a junior.
