A WOMAN has been left with “awful” burns from laser facelift treatment after her beautician was too busy arguing on the phone with her boyfriend.
Asli Ilhan, from the Muratpasa region of Antalya, Turkey said she paid a “high price” for the practitioner’s mistake as a court ruled that she was a victim of negligence.
The 42-year-old had visited the beauty salon for a second session of laser treatment in November last year.
However, her beautician, only described in court as A. A., allegedly started to argue with her lover on the phone.
With her attention drawn elsewhere, Asil described how she began to feel her face burning – in a sensation that she later described as “awful.”
After returning home with a sore face, Ilhan told the Court how she went to the pharmacy to buy creams in a desperate bid to alleviate the stinging sensation.
But nothing could stop the scarring from spreading – with permanent marks later visible across her entire face.
Ilhan subsequently filed a complaint against the owner, claiming that her emotional state had taken a turn for the worst as the result of her shocking injuries.
Stating that she would never go to a beauty salon again, she said: "People sometimes make mistakes, but (on this occasion) I paid a high price.”
"I am facing a bigger problem than saggy skin now. I have a lot of trouble with the marks on my face. I feel awful."
This month a Turkish court ruled that the owner of the beauty salon would charged with a £195 fine over 10 equal instalments as means of compensation to her former client.
What is a facelift?
A facelift, also known as rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure aimed at tightening up the face and reducing sagging skin.
Those with jowls or a lot of loose skin around the lower face are typically the ones going under the knife.
It is typically performed under general anaesthetic and according to the NHS, the surgery typically goes as follows:
- make cuts (incisions) above the hairline at the temples, which extend down in front of your ear, underneath your earlobe and behind the ear
- make cuts under the chin if the jawline is also being lifted
- remove the surplus facial skin
- pull the remaining skin backwards and upwards before stitching it into its new position
- sometimes redistribute facial fat and tissue or add this to the face
- bandage the face to minimise bruising and swelling
A full facelift's effects will last around five to seven years.
But the victim’s lawyer Suleyman Kesici blasted the decision – suggesting the punishment was “simply not enough.”
He said: "The court issued a penalty of TRY 3,360 (£195) and this penalty will be paid in 10 instalments.
“But we think that the penalty for burning a person's face in a way that leaves obvious marks is not a judicial fine. “
Ilhan added: "Not only was my face badly burned, but I had a lot of psychological distress during this period as well.
The pain I've suffered in one year will be compensated with a small fine paid over 10 instalments. I absolutely do not accept this decision."
The 42-year-old has also reportedly demanded her money back from another beauty salon after claiming that their treatment to fix the problem only made it worse.
The status of her second claim is unknown.
