Just Stop Oil return to the streets of London for another slow march

Just Stop Oil return to the streets of London for another slow-march protest but are moved on by police just 10 minutes later

  • Just Stop Oil’s protest repeated yet again this morning in Hammersmith Road
  • As usual police stopped it in around ten minutes and the street was cleared free

A now regular procedure of Just Stop Oil campaigners slow-walking in a road before police move them continued again this morning as the repetitive protests continued.

London’s Hammersmith Road was the location today as around four climate activists, clad in their familiar orange hi-vis jackets entered the stretch.

Motorists and members of the public fatigued by the campaigners’ antics phoned the police immediately after they were spotted at 8.09am.

Officers were scrambled to the scene and arrived within four minutes to come face to face with the protesters.

Two minutes later the force issued a Section 12 condition was issued on the stretch making it an arrestable offence to say in the road.

Officers dealt with the campaigning swiftly and clear the road after just ten minutes of protest

By 8.19am – just ten minutes after the protest started – the campaigners were moved on and the street cleared.

It meant they were only able to promote their cause for around ten minutes, undoubtedly sparking more questions about the point and effectiveness of this style of activism.

Just Stop Oil say it is going to be carrying out the same tactics and actions forever unless the government and multi-national corporations cave in to their demands.

The campaign group wants an end to new fossil fuel projects, yet have so far failed to target any of the countries who are the worst environmental offenders.

Just Stop Oil has angered motorists and most members of the public since it was created last February.

On Monday schoolchildren – whose generation’s future JSO say they are campaigning to help – turned on them.

They berated them at a protest in Stratford, east London, and Ealing, west London, for their now-familiar street shuffle.

The outfit has recently become something of a political hot potato. The Tories say Labour are in the pocket of them, due to both organisations receiving donations from the same eco-entrepreneur, Dale Vince.

The tycoon who founded energy company Ecotricity even joined the protesters last week for one of their marches.

It comes after measures to tackle eco-zealots were approved by the Lords last week.

Peers voted against moves to throw out Suella Braverman’s proposals, which will give police wider powers to tackle road-blocking protesters.

The Home Secretary said groups such as Just Stop Oil were ‘putting people’s lives at risk’ by blocking ambulances and stopping patients from getting to hospital.

A Met Office spokesperson said this morning: ‘Police were made aware of Just Stop Oil protesters walking slowly in Hammersmith Road at 8.09am.

‘Officers were on the scene at 8.13am. At 8.15am, a Section 12 condition was issued. At 8.19am, the road was cleared, and the traffic was moving.’
