Moment ASDA delivery driver stuns customer with piano performance

Amazing moment ASDA delivery driver stuns customer with note-perfect performance on her Grand Piano after he unpacked her shopping

  • Delivery driver Elly Bajarias, 54, left viewers stunned with his piano playing skills

This is the breathtaking moment an ASDA delivery driver showcased his hidden talent by performing a passionate solo on a customer’s grand piano – leaving people claiming he’s ‘wasted in his job’.

Francesca Green saw worker Elly Bajarias’s ‘eyes light up’ when he spotted a grand piano in the hallway of her home near Lutterworth, Leicestershire, on May 12.

After hearing that he used to play, the 36-year-old invited him to have a go while she unpacked her shopping – but admits his shyness made her think he ‘wouldn’t be very good’.

She was left stunned when the 54-year-old played a ‘passionate’ rendition of Yann Tiersen’s Comptine d’un Autre été, L’après-midi – from the classic French film Amelie – as well as classical hit Ballade pour Adeline and couldn’t help but record the impromptu performances.

Amazing footage shows Elly’s fingers dancing across the piano to master the ‘tricky’ piece as he appears lost in the moment.

He’s since revealed he’s self-taught as his family couldn’t afford lessons where he grew up in the Philippines but he used to play for a Hong Kong band before moving to the UK 20 years ago.

Elly says he only has a keyboard at home so it was ‘nice to feel the soft touch of ivory’ and the experience was ‘really enjoyable’.

Mother-of-two Francesca hailed the driver as a ‘lost talent’ in her Facebook post which has been viewed more than 800,000 times by touched users.

Many said the videos made them ’emotional’, while others even insisted his talent is being ‘wasted’ and he needs to return to the stage.

A surprised manager at ASDA’s Fosse Park store, Leicester, where Elly works says he didn’t even know he could play piano and was amazed by his talent.

Francesca Green, from Lutterworth, Leicestershire, said: ‘His face lit up when he saw the piano.

‘Since he was only standing there while I emptied the baskets I asked if he wanted to have a go. He said he was fine at first but then I said that he might as well.

‘I thought he wasn’t going to be very good at first because he was a bit shy, so I left him to it. When I heard him I realised how good he was.

Francesca says she originally posted the video privately but was urged to make it public to showcase Elly’s talent

‘I left him for a minute then I just started to film. I wanted to show my family how odd it was that the ASDA delivery guy had started playing our piano.

‘He was so into it. It was like nobody else was there. He played it with so much passion and he was really moved by being able to play an instrument like that.

‘It was humbling because when my daughter’s not playing on it it’s just collecting dust really.

‘When he stopped playing he said he could sit here all day, but he knew he needed to get back to work. He didn’t want to get up and said it had made his day.

‘We’ve joked that we’re not interested now unless someone can show us a talent when they come to our door. Whoever comes next will feel out of place if they can’t play the piano.

‘He clearly loves it so much. Hopefully he’ll start gigging again. It’s never too late.’

The pair have been in touch since and the machinery hire firm worker says Elly has enjoyed reading the compliments on her post.

There has been a huge and positive reaction to Elly’s incredible piano playing skills online

It’s reported the father-of-three played in a Hong Kong band before moving to the UK 20 years ago and he’s been working for ASDA for three years.

Elly said: ‘I just arrived at Francesca’s house with the groceries when I saw the grand piano and was just mesmerised by it. I’d never played on one before. I only have a keyboard at home.

‘We got talking and she asked me if I’d like to play it! It was really enjoyable. It was nice to feel the soft touch of ivory as a keyboard is so different.

‘Francesca’s mum came rushing in from outside when she heard me playing and saw me and said ‘is that the Asda man driver?’ It was funny. It just came out of nowhere.

‘My mum showed me how to play the piano when I was about five or six. I never had proper lessons with a teacher as we couldn’t afford that in the Philippines at that time.

‘Over the years I’ve just really taught myself. I listen to pieces of music then just play them. I don’t look at sheet music.’

Francesca was given the grand piano as a present five years ago and has since had lessons but admits she doesn’t play very well.

Her video has earned more than 1,300 comments and more than 7,000 reactions from stunned users.

The post said: ‘When your ASDA delivery driver spots your piano in the hallway and says how beautiful it is then proceeds to tell you he used to be in a band but doesn’t get the chance to play anymore as only has an old keyboard at home.

‘I invited him in to play of course. What a lost talent.’

One commented: ‘This man needs to be made famous! Wasted talent.’

Another said: ‘Never judge a book by its cover. Wow this is amazing!’

A second added: ‘A very touching performance. A tinge of sadness that he doesn’t get to play on a piano usually but here’s hoping that will change for him moving forward. Wishing him much luck for his future.’

A third added: ‘This got me all emotional.’

Siten Patel, online trading manager at ASDA’s Fosse Park store, Leicester, said: ‘I didn’t know Elly could even play the piano until I saw the video. It was amazing. He is so talented.

‘He is such a kind-hearted person who always sees the good in people. Everyone loves him here.’
