A MYSTERY mass poisoning has left 10 children in hospital after a "gas leak" near a kids playground.

Emergency workers rushed to the park in Neumarkt, Mannheim, Germany at 11am this morning after several tots complained of eye irritation and coughing after going down the slide.

An irritant "toxic" gas is said to have broken out in the playground.

The playground is only a few meters away from the Neckar School.

Two classes from the school had been playing on the grounds when they began to complain of feeling ill.

It's thought 12 children have been affected – with ten being rushed to hospital.

According to local reports they are suffering from irritation of the mucous membranes.

The fire brigade is understood to be tackling the gas leak while police shield off the area.

Mannheim-Neckarstadt police station are now treating the case with suspicion of bodily harm.

Numerous emergency services are still on site.
