Naked carpenter Robert Jenner is jailed for 12 months

Naturist, 48, nicknamed ‘The Naked Carpenter’ is sentenced to one year in jail after walking into a police station exposing his genitals in see-through thong and trousers

  • Robert Jenner was nicknamed ‘The Naked Carpenter’ for working almost nude
  • He has been convicted several times for exposing himself while in public
  • He was jailed for 12 months after he exposed himself at Maidstone police station
  • A jury at Maidstone Crown Court took 15 minutes to convict the former soldier

A naturist nicknamed ‘The Naked Carpenter’ who walked into a police station exposing his manhood in see-through thong and trousers has been jailed for 12 months.

Robert Jenner, who has gained notoriety in the past for his revealing behaviour, was dressed in the flimsy, mesh-type garments just hours after being released from prison for previous offences of exposure.

As well as being on licence, he was also subject to a seven-year criminal behaviour order (CBO) in respect of his choice of clothing.

A court heard the first police officer he met could see the 48-year-old’s genitals – but she asked a colleague to confirm her sighting as she was not wearing her glasses.

When quizzed why that morning he had not simply put on ‘the kind of underwear bought in Marks and Spencer’, the former Princess of Wales Regiment infantryman who served in the Iraq War replied he had put on ‘the first thing that came to hand’.

However, the judge was told by prosecutor Simon Sandford that it was ‘most unlikely’ he had left prison wearing the see-through clothes, and therefore must have changed into them before going to see police about reclaiming a mobile phone.

A jury took 15 minutes before passing a guilty verdict. Jenner, pictured, was handed a further 12-month jail term, although he is likely to be released immediately due to the amount of time he spent on remand

Jenner, of no fixed address, claimed at his trial that how he dresses is a human right and denied breaching the CBO, saying his top covered his manhood.

But a jury at Maidstone Crown Court, Kent, took just 15 minutes to reject his defence and find him guilty.

Passing the maximum sentence today for such a breach offence, Judge Charles Macdonald QC said the jury ‘saw through his pack of lies’.

He told Jenner: ‘There is a long and persistent history of behaviour that is inexcusably criminal, and a continuing risk of criminal and anti-social behaviour.

‘All that story of a top covering is just a pack of lies the jury saw through.

‘This is repeat offending showing complete contempt for the court and the law.’

In February this year he lost an appeal against conviction and 12-month jail term for walking through Maidstone town centre dressed in similar see-through trousers which revealed his buttocks and genitals

The former soldier earned his Naked Carpenter moniker in September 2016 when he made headlines for carrying out DIY jobs, gardening and chores in the nude, bar his work boots.

It led to complaints from outraged neighbours but in February 2017 he was cleared of 11 charges of indecent exposure relating to his naked activities at his home.

However, he has since notched up numerous convictions for flashing his genitals, by wearing crotchless trousers while working as a Hermes delivery driver and parading in transparent shorts in a supermarket.

The subsequent CBO imposed in March 2019 stated he had to have at least one layer of clothing covering his genitals when in public areas or not attending a naturist event.

But on January 12 this year, Jenner went to Maidstone police station in Kent in the see-through thong and trousers.

Maidstone Crown Court was told that having arrived just before 5pm, Detective Constable Melanie Bolt was called to the front counter to speak to him.

‘She invited him to accompany her to an interview room close by. She believed she could see his penis through the clothing he was wearing,’ said Mr Sandford.

‘However, she wore glasses, didn’t have them on and so asked a colleague to attend and confirm what she could see.’

Mr Sandford said PC Homam Al-Sinawi then saw the ex-serviceman sitting behind a desk and, on asking him to stand up, he noticed his genitals ‘were on show’.

‘He could clearly see the defendant’s trousers and underwear were both see-through and he could see the defendant’s genitalia,’ added the prosecutor.

‘That was clearly a breach of the criminal behaviour order.

‘He was arrested and on caution replied “Pants have been washed a lot”, presumably suggesting they had become more see-through as a result.’

The court heard the clothing was placed on a mannequin by police for the purposes of taking photographs for evidence, with a piece of brown tape placed over the penis.

Passing the maximum sentence today for such a breach offence, Judge Charles Macdonald QC said the jury ‘saw through his pack of lies’

The jury was shown both the images and the clothing and Mr Sandford maintained: ‘it is clear his genitals were clear through his clothing and in breach of the order.’

Representing himself at trial, Jenner denied his genitals were ‘on show’. He claimed they only became visible when police asked him to lift his top and ‘do a little dance’.

‘Had I been on show as the police suggested, I wouldn’t have been asked to lift my top. My genitals were not on show,’ he said.

In his police interview he chose not to answer when asked if he got ‘a sexual thrill’ from exposing himself in public.

But Niall Doherty, defending at Jenner’s sentencing, said there was nothing ‘sinister, puerile or sexual’ about his behaviour.

‘He believes in naturism….In his mind his behaviour is acceptable and in accordance with his human rights,’ Mr Docherty told the court.

‘He doesn’t regret anything he has done but is thoroughly and utterly sick of the prison system.’

At the time of his arrest in January, he was remanded in custody ahead of his court case. As a result, he is likely to be released from prison due to time served. He will be subject to a one-year supervision order by the probation service. The Criminal Behaviour Order will also continue.

It was said he had once been an ‘active’ member of the Naturist Society, taking part in naked swims and visiting nudist beaches in France, Spain and Kent’s Isle of Sheppey.

The jurors were not told of his string of previous convictions for exposure or of his prison release that day until after they had returned their unanimous verdict.

In February this year he lost an appeal against conviction and 12-month jail term for walking through Maidstone town centre dressed in similar see-through trousers which revealed his buttocks and genitals.

He had worn the transparent garment to go drinking in a nearby Wetherspoon’s pub.

When asked by a startled officer what he was wearing underneath the trousers, a laughing Jenner simply replied ‘Socks’ and dubbed himself ‘Mr Inappropriate’.

At the time of that arrest late at night on January 19 2020, Jenner had again been recently released from prison, on that occasion for 10 offences of exposure.

Jenner, previously from Snodland, Kent, but now of no fixed address, claims to have been a naturist for more than 20 years and served for 10 years in the army.

In March 2019 he was jailed for two years after a court heard he wore jeans with a hole cut in his crotch area while delivering parcels.

He also paraded his manhood by wearing see-through shorts during visits to a supermarket, country park and shopping centre, all in Kent.

His victims over a 10-month period included a 14-year-old schoolgirl and a pregnant woman. On two occasions when he exposed himself it was snowing.

In December last year he was sentenced to 10 months’ imprisonment for breaching sex offender register conditions.
