Elderly couple rescued from car ‘almost engulfed by water’ in Campbelltown

Firefighters have rescued an elderly couple from a flooded road in Sydney’s south-west minutes before it was “swallowed” by rising waters.

The dramatic scene unfolded as crews were deployed to Menangle Road in Campbelltown shortly before 10pm on Monday night, finding three cars in floodwaters.

“Two elderly occupants, trapped in one of the vehicles, were on a mobile phone with relatives at the scene, seeking help,” Fire and Rescue NSW said.

“The firefighters entered the floodwaters to reach the vehicle, some 75 metres away. It was almost engulfed by water.”

A tanker was used to help gain access to the scene and rescue tools were relayed to the vehicle, so firefighters could break the car windows.

The two occupants were freed and carried to safety by firefighters, assisted by members of the public.

“The rising waters swallowed the vehicle minutes after the couple was rescued,” FRNSW said.

The couple suffered minor injuries and were taken by relatives for further medical treatment.

The remaining vehicles were checked to ensure nobody else was trapped.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, 54 millimetres of rain fell in Campbelltown between 8pm and 11pm last night.

Sussex Inlet on the NSW South Coast is the most recent suburb to be added to the NSW SES’ evacuation list.

Residents in low-lying areas of the suburb are being directed to evacuate by 12pm on Tuesday.

“Once floodwater reaches 1.4 metres at the Sussex Inlet Gauge parts of Sussex Inlet may be isolated,” the SES has told residents.

“If you remain in the area after 12pm Tuesday 8th March, you may be trapped without power, water and other essential services, and it may be too dangerous to rescue you.”
