Owners of Chihuahua mauled to death by XL Bully call for the dogs to be muzzled at all times – following spate of fatal dog attacks
- David and Laura Williams lost their dog Luca in an XL Bully attack on Friday
The owners of a Chihuahua that was mauled to death by an XL Bully have called for the dogs to be muzzled at all times.
David and Laura Williams, of Falmouth, lost their beloved pet Luca in a violent attack on Friday.
The American XL Bully, which also bit Laura in the attack, was put down following the incident.
This is the latest in a string of high-publicity attacks on people and animals by the powerful dog breed, often leading to life-changing or fatal injuries.
Rishi Sunak has since announced plans to ban the breed by the end of 2023.

Laura described Luca as ‘her baby’ and has called for XL Bully dogs to be muzzled at all times
Laura, 27, who described Luca as ‘her baby’, had barely taken four steps into a local field on a normal daily walk when the attack happened.
She was then charged at by the 30kg XL Bully before it began flinging 6kg Luca around in its mouth ‘like a toy’ – leaving her traumatized.
An eyewitness to the incident later described it as the ‘most horrendous thing I have ever seen in my life’.
Laura said: ‘He was on a lead, he’s always on a lead I never take him off a lead.
‘There was a group of kids in the middle of the field and that dog, XL Bully dog, just came running towards us. One of them was shouting ”no, no, no, no, no”.
‘I was going in circles trying to protect him, flying around; I was trying to catch him but I couldn’t because the dog was on me.
‘Luca was just being flung around like a toy. He just wouldn’t let go and I just tried to open the dog’s mouth and I just couldn’t.
‘He was like a rag doll being shook. It was horrific, I keep on having to relive that.’

She added: ‘I feel guilty because I feel I didn’t protect him enough, although I did everything I could to try and save him.’
Despite repeatedly punching the dog and getting help from a local boy and his mother, Laura was unable to remove Luca from the XL Bully’s mouth and had to leave him.
She rang her partner David, 38, but knew that it was already too late to save their beloved pet.
The tragedy comes after a mother-of-five was left fearing for her children’s safety after a violent XL Bully-type dog got into her garden and killed the family’s beloved pet cat – in violent scenes caught on CCTV.
Nima Begum, 40, was in her house when she heard a commotion outside and saw a man wrestling with the powerful animal.
He kept shouting ‘Your cat is fine’, even though his pet’s jaws were covered in blood.
Mrs Begum rushed outside and found her terrified cat Kiwi cowering in a tree, which she managed to get down with the help of a passer-by. But the tabby died before she could get her to a vet.
Now Luca’s death has left Laura unable to eat or sleep normally – with significant bruising from a bite she sustained during the ordeal.
She added: ‘I had to leave him in the other dog’s mouth because I knew I couldn’t do anything.
‘The son he was amazing. We were trying to work out a plan, I was trying to get Luca and he was trying to get the other dog off of him.’

Eventually one of the owners of the other dog came out and she called the XL away, and it then dropped Luca.
The pair then ‘gathered up’ Luca and took him to the nearby Rosemullion Vets by car, but Luca was already dead.
David said: ‘Keaton was trying to do everything he could but I think we knew he was gone,’ said David, who arrived at the vets from work after Laura called him.
‘What Laura’s had to go through is horrendous. What we wanted to say is certain breeds of dogs just think about how it’s worth muzzling them every single walk.

Despite the terrible attack, the XL Bully’s owner later posted on Facebook about the death of her dog – making no mention of the brutal attack.
The owner has since apologised to the couple for the incident.

‘It was also reported that the dog had bitten a person who attempted to intervene, resulting in a minor injury to the person’s hand.
‘The XL Bully was put to sleep at the vets following the incident, at the request of the owner.
‘Enquiries remain ongoing in relation to this matter.’
