‘New England men’s team announced…’: Social media erupts with memes as Lionesses beat Germany 2-1 to become Euro 2022 champions

Social media has erupted with memes after the Lionesses’ win this evening, when the England team beat Germany at the Euros 2022 final 2-1.

The women’s team have been heavily contrasted with the men’s team, who also went to penalties in 2021, but failed to take home the winning title.

One Twitter user shared a mock image of the country’s men’s team line up, supposedly chosen by manager Gareth Southgate, depicting the women’s team overlaid with moustaches. 

Another joked that the women’s team had broken a prophecy that no ‘Englishman’  would win the Euros. 

Others referenced women’s football history with an image from 2002 film Bend It Like Beckham. 

The Lionesses were the pride of the nation tonight after Chloe Kelly fired them into the history books.

It had been a tense 90 minutes with flying tackles and yellow cards peppering a highly-energetic match, watched by Prince William in the crowd.

As the celebrations continued, the Lionesses ‘gatecrashed’ manager Sarina Wiegman’s press conference singing ‘football’s coming home’ while two players climbed onto the desk and danced in front off the cameras.

Ahead of the game, major brands gave given their support to the Lionesses.

Specsavers, Yorkshire Tea, Cadbury and John Lewis all came out for England after the Women’s team qualified for their first Euros final since 2009 on Wednesday night, as they demolished Sweden 4-0 at Bramall Lane.

And to celebrate their success, Sainsbury’s released a new billboard to cheer on the women’s football team who played their first championship final on home soil since the 1980s at sold-out Wembley. 

They joined in the fun with a cryptic message to a classic football anthem to be sounded out via the veg and fruit. 

Opticians Specsavers also went down the subtle route with an eye test saying ‘It is actually coming home’ in reference to England, who have never won the tournament, playing their first and last final at home in 1984.

The Met Office also switched out its weather images of sun and rain for a forecast of ‘It’s coming home’ before the action kicked off today.

During the game, the introduction of Ella Toone looked to have settled it after she broke to fizz a shot past helpless German keeper Merle Frohms watched by a record 87,192 in the stadium.

But there was heartbreak minutes later as Magull worked her way into position to equalise, devastating England fans across the country.

With only ten minutes left, the game was left balancing on a knife edge with the ultimate prize at stake.

The stalemate could not be broken, going into another agonising 30 more minutes of extra time which at first had produced nothing more.

But Kelly was not about to let the game go to penalties and picked the biggest stage in the world to produce her first ever international goal.

She dominated German keeper Frohms to propel England to a 2-1 lead and set the game beyond any doubt. 

Tonight in a statement The Queen said the women would go down in history and be icons of sport.

She said: ‘My warmest congratulations, and those of my family, go to you all on winning the European Women’s Football Championships.

‘It is a significant achievement for the entire team, including your support staff.

‘The Championships and your performance in them have rightly won praise.

‘However, your success goes far beyond the trophy you have so deservedly earned.

‘You have all set an example that will be an inspiration for girls and women today, and for future generations.

‘It is my hope that you will be as proud of the impact you have had on your sport as you are of the result today.’
