Brits have been eating chocolate the wrong way – it should never be stored in the fridge and should be eaten at 11am, food experts have said.

A new study, commissioned by Galaxy, found the UK is a nation of chocoholics, with 34 per cent munching on chocolate daily.

Natalie Alibrandi, a food scientist, has unveiled the most common faux pas people make when enjoying sweet foods.

The most common mistake is when chocolate is stored in the fridge as humidity levels are too high.

And a lot of people in the UK are making this common mistake.

A study of 2,000 adults found 78 per cent of people stored chocolate in the fridge.

The best temperature for a chocolatey treat is 18C.

If chocolate is too warm, it will crumble or melt in your hands. If you cannot hear a snap when it breaks, it is probably not at the right temperature, the food scientist told The Telegraph.

Putting chocolate in the fridge can also cause oxidation to occur, causing sugar blooms, where the taste and odour from other foods is transferred into the bar.

M Alibrandi also said 11am time is the best time to eat chocolate. This is because cacao contains both sugar and caffeine meaning it’s good food to fuel you until lunch time.

Only one in five adults eat chocolate in the morning, the study found.
