Woman and child assaulted in violent Melton burglary

A woman and child have been violently assaulted during the burglary of a home west of Melbourne.

Police are searching for up to five men who forced entry via the back door of a house on Raleighs Road in Melton just before midnight on Friday. The men were believed to be armed with edged weapons.

The offenders assaulted a nine-year-old child before demanding money and assaulting a 51-year-old woman, police said. A 16-year-old boy ran from the house to get help.

Sergeant Megan Stefanec said the child required no medical attention, but the woman was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The males reportedly stole a gaming console and a mobile phone from the home.

Sergeant Stefanec said the males were described as African in appearance and between 16 and 20 years of age.
