Britain’s Got Talent is the most complained about show of 2020 after more than 31,000 viewers contacted Ofcom – with 25,000 coming from Diversity’s BLM-inspired routine

Britain’s Got Talent is said to have been the most complained about show of 2020 after more than 31,000 viewers contacted Ofcom.

It comes after the ITV series became the most complained about show of the decade following Diversity’s Black Lives Matter-inspired dance routine.

Elsewhere, Good Morning Britain finished in second place for complaints in 2020 with This Morning in third position, according to a Freedom of Information request made by The Sun.

Diversity’s Black Lives Matter inspired performance during Britain’s Got Talent’s first semi-final attracted more than 25,000 complaints to Ofcom.    

The performance saw group leader Ashley Banjo have a white police officer’s knee leaning on his neck, in reference to the death of black man George Floyd last year.

The routine left several people outraged over its political message, while a huge amount of people also praised the performance.

At the time, Ofcom announced they will not investigate the complaints any further, while ITV ‘stood with Diversity’ after they featured adverts in national newspapers in support of the controversial dance.

The singer also supported Diversity’s Black Lives Matter inspired dance routine and told critics they can ‘kiss my black a**’ after Ashley, 31, shared a post on Instagram from a critic telling him to keep politics out of entertainment.

Contestant Nabil Abdulrashid’s political stand-up routines also received 2,055 complaints after dividing viewers.

While judge Amanda Holden sparked 235 Ofcom complaints after one of her racy gowns led viewers to question whether she had suffered a wardrobe malfunction.

According to a Freedom of Information request made by The Sun, Britain’s Got Talent received a total of 31,763 complaints overall.

Elsewhere, the publication claims that Good Morning Britain finished in second place with a reported 13,215 Ofcom complaints.

The ITV chat show was hit by complaints after actor Dominic West told viewers he ‘jumped for joy’ when he heard Donald Trump had coronavirus.

A number of horrified viewers wrote to the broadcasting watchdog after hearing Dominic, 51, tell Kate Garraway, whose husband Derek is still recovering from the deadly virus, that it was ‘karma’ Trump had caught it. 

Host Kate later revealed on the show that Dominic had ‘personally apologised’ to her over his remarks.

While presenter Piers Morgan apologised to Ofcom after asking his fans to bombard the TV watchdog to support his ‘grilling’ of Care Minister Helen Whately.

The 55-year-old Good Morning Britain (GMB) presenter came under fire after his incendiary row with care minister Ms Whatley on the ITV show.

Ms Whately had been hammered by Mr Morgan, who accused her of not knowing how many health and care staff have died from the coronavirus.

She endured two interviews in less than two weeks, with her first appearance seeing her criticised for laughing after Mr Morgan confronted her over the number of people dying in care homes during the pandemic crisis.

But some viewers complained that the GMB presenter was ‘bullying’ her, while others insisted that Mr Morgan was doing his job holding Ms Whately ‘to account’.

‘Apparently nearly 2,000 people have now complained to Ofcom about me grilling Care minister Helen Whately too ‘unfairly’ when she couldn’t answer even basic questions,’ Mr Morgan tweeted. 

‘If you think I should continue grilling ministers in the way I’ve been doing, please tell Ofcom. Thanks.’

But the TV regulator issued a rare public plea to Mr Morgan to ‘go easy on the mentions’ after the watchdog became inundated.

Ofcom wrote: ‘Dear Piers, we’re usually happy with you keeping us busy. But right now we’re struggling to keep up after you asked your followers to contact us.

‘This means we may fail to help the people that need us most – such as the vulnerable or elderly. So could you please help us out and go easy on the mentions?’

Mr Morgan replied: ‘My apologies… I underestimated the scale of public support.’

Elsewhere This Morning is said to have finished in third place as the most complained show of 2020 with Loose Women, Sky News, I’m A Celebrity, Gogglebox and Love Island also receiving Ofcom complaints.

BBC shows were exempt due to complaints being referred to the corporation.
