George Clooney Reveals the Moment He Knew He Wanted Children with Wife Amal

They say love changes you. Just when you think you’ve laid out the trajectory of your existence, love sweeps you off your feet, shifting everything you thought you once knew about yourself. At least, that’s how it seems to have gone with George Clooney.

On a new episode of the WTF with Marc Maron podcast, the actor revealed the moment he finally decided to have kids with his wife, Amal Clooney—and his reaction to the news that the kids would be twins.

“Listen, I didn’t want to get married. I didn’t want to have kids,” he began. “And then, this extraordinary human being walked into my life, and I just fell madly in love. Then I knew from the minute I met her that everything was going to be different.”

Clooney also recalled the initial conversation he had with Amal about the prospect of having children. “We are awfully lucky in life,” he recounted Amal saying to him during an outdoor stroll. “And I said, ‘Yeah, we are lucky we found each other.’ She said, ‘Seems like that luck should be shared with some other folks.'” Their final decision to conceive was a meaningful one for Clooney. “I have to say it was very emotional, because I really was convinced that wasn’t my lot in life and was comfortable with that,” he said.

Twins Ella and Alexander were born in 2017. In the interview, the actor added that he was particularly “gobsmacked” at the news of twins, given that Amal’s sister gave birth to her own set. “There is that moment when you go to the doctor and they pull out this piece of paper, which is a sonogram, and they go, ‘Here,’ and you go, ‘It’s a baby boy.’ I’m like, ‘Baby boy, fantastic,'” he recalled. “And then, they said, ‘And the other one is the girl,’ and I was like, ‘Oh, shit.'”

He added, “I love it now. And thank God they have each other during the pandemic.”
