Katie Price describes the devastating moment Dwight Yorke told her ‘I’ve disowned Harvey’

Katie Price has opened up on the devastating moment Dwight Yorke told her he had "disowned" their disabled son Harvey – who was just a child at the time.

Harvey, now 19, suffers from complex medical needs due to the rare genetic condition Prader-Willi Syndrome and has also been diagnosed with ADHD, autism and septo-optic dysplasia, which causes blindness.

After he was born in 2002 Katie says pro-footballer Dwight was never in close contact – meeting Harvey just 10 times in his early years.

Now, in an exclusive extract from her moving new autobiography Harvey And Me, Katie movingly describes the moment Dwight finally cut ties with her oldest child.

In Harvey & Me: A Mother's Love, the mum of five writes: "Dwight actually spoke to Harvey over the phone on his tenth birthday. My mum had organised it with his manager. To be honest, I was shocked that it happened.

"But I think Dwight was even more shocked when Harvey asked him, 'When am I seeing you?'"

This led to what was to prove a fateful meeting between Katie and Dwight.

Katie writes: "The last time I saw Dwight was in 2012, when I met up with him at a restaurant in Alderley Edge, Cheshire, to speak about Harvey and what Harvey had said on the phone.

"I can remember the day very clearly. I arrived at the restaurant and Dwight was already there.

"I could see him sitting waiting for me at the table. I felt anxious and I didn't really want to be there, but I was doing it for our son.

"I walked over to him and he didn't really say much – it was so awkward. He hadn't even bought me a drink! But that was typical Dwight. I didn’t expect anything less.

"We didn't end up having food, it was just a very quick, unfriendly meeting. He was being really arrogant and wouldn't even look at me."

Even today, the meeting sticks in Katie's memory.

"I was thinking, 'Why the f**k am I actually even here?' I was talking about Harvey and how he's made so much progress.

"I was trying to show Dwight videos of him playing the piano, but he kept saying he didn't want to know. I have no idea why he even agreed to meet me if that was going to be his attitude.

"I brought up what Harvey had said to him on his birthday and asked if he would like to start seeing him regularly.

"And that's when he put the final nail in the coffin and said, 'To be honest, I've disowned you and I've disowned Harvey out of my life. I don't want anything to do with either of you.' Wow. How low can you get?"

Despite her shock at his words, Katie says Dwight had never been committed to his oldest son.

“In the whole 19 years of Harvey’s life, Dwight must have seen him about 10 times," the 43 year old writes.

During an interview in 2009 with Kay Burley, Dwight himself discussed his relationship with Harvey. He claimed his lack of contact was due to “a combination of different things”.

Dwight, who also has a second son born five years after Harvey, explained: "One, my time schedule and being based up in Manchester and a footballer on an everyday basis.

“I’m not sitting here and saying I’m a total perfect father. I’ve made mistakes along the way and I would love to turn the clock back.”

For her part, Katie claims Dwight's initial contributions towards Harvey's care soon dwindled.

“Dwight doesn’t pay anything towards Harvey either," she explains in her book. "In the beginning, he had to by law. It was around £1,300 a month.

“But it didn’t last long. He kept missing payments and after about a year and a half, if that, they stopped completely. To this day, I haven’t asked him for another penny. Even though I’m completely within my rights to do so."

And she said of Dwight: "I always say that any man can fill a pram, but it takes a real man to be a father."
