I was born with two vaginas – doctors only realised when I was pregnant, we were all stunned

A MUM-to-be who found she had TWO VAGINAS during pregnancy has opened up about having the rare 1 in 4 million condition.

Daisy Hooper was born with a 1 in 4 million disorder called Herlyn Werner Wunderlich Syndrome – which means she has two uteruses, two cervixes and two vaginas, but only one kidney.

The 25-year-old, from Donington, Lincolnshire, had absolutely no idea she suffered from this incredibly rare disorder until she became pregnant for the first time back in May 2020.

The mum said she was terrified her unique condition would mean she might not be able to carry her baby to full term.

But thankfully, she and her welder partner Scott, 26, welcomed their baby boy Ellis in January this year with no issues – and now she is raising awareness about the syndrome.

Payroll manager Daisy said: “When I was around 14, I really struggled with my periods. I had heavy bleeding and it was really painful.

“My mum took me to the doctors and I was put on the contraceptive injection, which completely stopped my periods and the pain.

“I never thought much more about it, but looking back I think this could have been a sign.

“I was so shocked and scared when I discovered I had HWWS. My first thought was whether our baby would be okay.

“Thankfully, the pregnant was relatively smooth sailing with all things considered.

“Our little miracle was born in January 2021 via caesarean at 38 weeks, weighing 6lb 11oz.”

I was so shocked and scared when I discovered I had HWWS. My first thought was whether our baby would be okay.

Daisy said she would never forget the look of confusion on her sonographer’s face when she went for her very first ultrasound.

At first glance, the mum was warned her uterus might be covered by a cyst or even worse, that she might be experiencing an ectopic pregnancy – which meant her baby was growing outside the womb.

But after further examinations, it was confirmed Daisy was suffering from the rare syndrome, characterised by having two uterues, two cervixes, two vaginas and only one kidney.

Daisy’s disorder also involves a right sided obstructed hemivagina and right sided hematocolpos – which means her right vagina is obstructed by a wall of tissue that blocks menstrual blood from flowing out of the body.

The mum will have surgery later in the year to remove this wall of tissue in order to improve her menstrual flow and reduce complications with fertility and pregnancy in the future.

She said: “I was so excited when we fell pregnant and couldn’t wait to see our baby.

“But during the ultrasound, the lady doing it wasn’t speaking much. I could see she was having trouble.

“She told us she couldn’t see our baby and something didn’t look quite right. I was terrified.

“I went to another ultrasound with two more experienced sonographers the next morning, but they still couldn’t see any baby.

“I had blood tests and it was confirmed I was pregnant, and my HCG levels ruled out the possibility of an ectopic pregnancy.

“The only option to figure out what was going on was to have an MRI scan. This was when the doctor told me I had the condition.

“I was referred to a specialist clinic in London who deals with early pregnant complications. I was so scared, and had no idea what to expect.

“They managed to pick up the baby’s heartbeat on an ultrasound and I was so relieved.

“To see our baby on the screen and to hear the heartbeat was the best feeling in the world.”

The mum said she feels due to the rarity of Herlyn Werner Wunderlich Syndrome, it remains a very unknown and misunderstood medical condition.

She hopes that by sharing her story she can raise awareness and shed light onto this rare syndrome.

Daisy added: “People always seem very shocked about my diagnosis.

“As I am still learning about it, I find it difficult to explain to people.

“I wish the doctors knew more about the condition and there was more awareness surrounding it."
