Nécessaire's Shampoo and Conditioner Are Like a Facial for Your Scalp

My relationship with shampoo and conditioner is pretty utilitarian. My thick, slightly dry, and frizzy hair has to be washed a couple times a week, so I reach for whatever hydrating or smoothing shampoo and conditioner combo I have in my shower.

While there are a ton of shampoos and conditioners out there that work just fine, I don't have strong opinions about any of them the way I do about mascaras and vitamin C serums. Basically, none have wowed me enough to make me stay loyal to them after I hit the bottom of the bottles.

However, when I caught wind that Nécessaire, a body care brand known for its elevated formulas and sleek packaging, launched its first-ever haircare products, I immediately made room in my shower for The Scalp Duo, a shampoo and conditioner that is sold as a set for $40 or can be purchased separately for $25 each.

The products are marketed towards scalp health, which fortunately, I've never dealt with dryness and flakes. That being said, considering I somewhat neglect this aspect of my personal care routine, my scalp could use a little extra TLC.

Both the shampoo and conditioner are formulated with ingredients commonly found in skincare, which makes sense considering your scalp is skin, too — it's just covered by hair. This includes vitamin B3 (aka niacinamide), vitamin B5, aloe vera leaf juice, and celery seed extract. The shampoo promises to cleanse and reset the scalp from excess oil and product buildup without stripping skin, while the conditioner is a creamy treatment that nourishes dryness. Bonus: These products are fragrance-free, so they won't cause irritation on sensitive scalps.

Despite being sulfate-free, the shampoo gives an intense lather (thanks to plant surfactants), which makes for a nice scalp massage. My hair feels clean but not too clean when I rinse it out. As for the conditioner, it has the texture of a rich, thick moisturizer you'd use when your skin gets dry during the winter. Working it into my hair gives me a ton of slip in the shower, removing any tangles and loose strands. When I rinse it out, my hair feels soft before I even get out of the shower and blow dry it.

Speaking of blow drying, my hair feels just as smooth once I've dried and styled it. Not to mention, the products add shine and a bit of volume. Needless to say, these bottles are staying front and center in my shower.

And hey, it doesn't hurt that the shampoo and conditioner bottles have a sexy minimalist design like the rest of the line.

Good to Go used to be the column where we'd share the beauty products we can't travel without. But while travel's off the table, we'll be focusing on products that make us feel good in quarantine. This month, why I'm obsessed with Nécessaire's The Scalp Duo.
