Darwin helped pioneer much of what is now modern day evolutionary theory including the idea of survival of the fittest: through natural selection.

Tom Parker, of property website Zoopla, said: ‘This seaside property is steeped in history and was once the residence of Charles Darwin, who would have enjoyed its elevated sea views from the spacious balcony and bedrooms.

‘Darwin famously spent eight years studying barnacles and the seafront location of this property would have made the perfect base for his research.’

Ramsgate is a seaside town with one of the largest marinas on the English south coast.

The property overlooks the harbour, which is flanked by restaurants, cafes and independent shops.

The town is steeped in history with listed buildings, Regency squares and St Augustine’s Abbey.

The abbey was a project of Augustus Putin who designed the interior of the Palace of Westminster and Big Ben.

Ramsgate also has a network of wartime and smugglers’ tunnels, traditional pubs, docks and sweeping sands.

There is also a high speed train service to London from Ramsgate station.

The agency’s James Perks said: ‘Once the residence of Charles Darwin, this Grade II listed property is moments away from Ramsgate’s bustling marina and offers views across the country’s only Royal Harbour.

‘The property offers a lot of scope for personalisation with plenty of room for families as it has six beds, six reception rooms and four baths. It is a rare opportunity in a central location.’
