Barclays and Tesco are the best places to work in the UK if you’re keen to progress up the career ladder, according to new research.

LinkedIn, the world’s largest professional network, has released its top 25 firms to build and sustain a long-term profession.

Now in its fifth year, the Top Companies List identifies the organisations in the UK that offer growth, skills development opportunities and job stability to its employees.

During what has been a particularly challenging year for many businesses, it shines a light on the companies that have demonstrated they can provide its workers with the opportunity to grow – both internally and after they have left. 

The list is compiled based on actions taken on the platform by LinkedIn’s 30 million UK members between January and December 2020, including the company’s stability and gender diversity as well as skills growth and ability to advance internally.

Barclays, which offers a robust mentoring programme and compulsory training modules to employees as part of wider diversity and inclusion commitments, has taken the top spot on the list. 

It’s followed by Tesco, which has claimed the number two spot for the first time and provides a range of skills-based resources to help employees grow in digital confidence. 

NatWest Group, coming in at number three, also boasts a strong skills development offering for workers. 

Dominating this year’s list are a number of sectors that have successfully adapted to meet the challenges of the pandemic, as well as the changing world of work.

The financial services, technology, supermarket and online retail sectors are well-represented, reflective of changing consumer behaviours.

With people spending more time at home over the past year, almost everything has moved online. In particular, the retail sector has seen a real shift when it comes to consumer shopping habits, as many move towards a virtual shopping experience. 

In turn, Tesco and Sainsbury’s (which ranked seventh in the list) – both of which saw an increase in online shopping sales during the pandemic – make their debut on the list, alongside Amazon (at 12) and eBay (at 21). 

The growth of online retail has created a huge need for roles within functions such as warehouse management, logistics and delivery.
