Event list for this evening

With the Paralympics team already selected, tonight’s program is all Olympic events.

  • Women’s 200m backstroke
  • Men’s 100m butterfly
  • Women’s 800m freestyle
  • Women’s 50m freestyle
  • Men’s 50m freestyle
  • Men’s 1500m freestyle

A quick run through and we have Kaylee McKeown in the 200m backstroke, aiming to qualifying for her third event. She’s been in sublime form this week, having already swum a world record in the 100m backstroke.

Cody Simpson will be gunning for an outside chance on the Olympic team in the 100m butterfly but Matt Temple is the fastest qualifier.

Cate Campbell, Emma McKeon and Bronte Campbell are part of a salivating 50m free race, while the men’s 50m will be equally as interesting. Buckle up.

Pop star Cody Simpson turned a few heads this morning

For those wondering all along whether musician-turned-athlete Cody Simpson really can compete at the top level, the answer is a definitive yes. But the real work for Simpson will only begin once Australia’s Olympic trials have come to an end in Adelaide.

The Queenslander, who shot to fame as a recording artist as a teenager, made the final of the 100m butterfly on Thursday night, qualifying in sixth place after another dramatic improvement to his personal best.

Simpson was in the fast heat to lead off the program and finished third in a time of 52.84 seconds, shaving almost a second off his previous best. It was good enough for a spot in the final behind the fastest qualifier, Matt Temple, the former scaffolder from Victoria who leads the pack with a 51.79s.

Hello and welcome

Evening swimming lovers.

It’s the final night of the Olympic trials and what a week it’s been.

As always, I’ll be on the blog from the Coogee bureau, while Phil Lutton, who has been working around the clock the past few weeks, will be adding his insight across the evening from the pool deck in Adelaide.

Also, Australia will name its Olympic swimming team at the conclusion of tonight’s races, so stay tuned until the end where we find out whether the likes of Mack Horton and Bronte Campbell can sneak onto the team as relay swimmers, along with those who have qualified in individual events.
