Alan Soutar v Diogo Portela – 14:30

You might not have heard a lot about Alan Soutar but I predict that will change very soon.

He got his tour card in January and has had an impressive debut year, peaking when he beat Raymond van Barneveld on his way to a last 16 appearance in the UK Open.

Diogo Portela finally won an Ally Pally match at the fourth attempt last year but his level is probably a bit behind Soutar’s should they both be on their game.

3-0 to Soutar should appeal but I’ll go for the match treble (Most 180s, highest checkout and win to kick off this treble.

Florian Hempel v Martin Schindler – 20:00

It’s a battle of the Germans as former Handball player Hempel looks to emulate Gerwyn Price by successfully transitioning from one sport to another.

Unfortunately for him, he faces a 25-year old who has plenty of experience, though without a win at the Worlds so far.

I predict that changes today however. Schindler won the German Super League this year and that should give him plenty of confidence after losing his tour card at the start of the year.

Expect him to progress to a match against the Belgian Dimitri Van den Bergh.

Steve Beaton v Fallon Sherrock – 21:00

Here we go then: Can Fallon Sherrock cause another sensation at Alexandra Palace?

What is different this time around is that she is favourite to dispose of Steve Beaton and it will be interesting to see whether she can rise to that kind of pressure; one which she hasn’t experienced so far when taking on the men.

An underrated part of Sherrock’s game is her power scoring.

She hit 18 180s in her three matches at the Worlds two years ago, and she goes up against a steady consistent player in Beaton, but not someone who is known for multiple maximums.

I love her price for most 180s, and although I can’t see it yet, look out for an under line on Beaton 180s as that is worth a play too.
