SINGAPORE – Athletes have endured coups, had their lives rearranged by 9/11, flown Spitfires in World War II and been forced to forfeit dreams because of boycotts. Life often gets in the way of hitting a ball.

But nothing has tripped them, as it has the planet, like this virus. Playing has become a dangerous way to earn a living. Travel is fraught with risk and any contact is precarious. In Doha tennis, Bangkok badminton, Singapore e-sports, positive tests have occurred. Germs don’t obey protocols.
