All Creatures Great and Small was originally a British television series made by the BBC in 1978, which was based on the books about veterinary surgeon Alf Wight, who wrote under the pseudonym James Herriot. The latest adaptation of the drama made its return on Channel 5 in September 2021 for a second season and it saw lead character James (Nicholas Ralph) make some tough decisions about his romance with Helen Alderson (Rachel Shenton).

However, in an extract from the book The World of All Creatures Great and Small, Rachel opened up about what it is like filming for the Channel 5 drama.

She went on to detail despite being given time off while filming, she chooses to be at work.

Speaking about filming with her co-star Nicholas, the actress began: “I was excited about working with Nick.

“And it has been really wonderful discovering our characters together as we embark on this journey.”

She continued: “The really lovely thing is that when I met the other main cast members.

“Sam, Callum and Anna, I felt exactly as I had when I first met Nick.

“These were all people I felt immediately comfortable with, and we became close very quickly.

“This definitely feeds onto the screen and creates its own magic.”

Rachel went on to explain the cast members “care about each other”.

“We are a community on and off-screen, and it’s clear to the viewer,” she added.

“Usually you quite like a day off work, but this is the only job where I look at the schedule, see that I have a day off and think, ‘actually, I’d prefer it if I were in’.”

Rachel said when she’s not working she loves yoga.

“I always pack a yoga mat and candles wherever I go,” the Helen star admitted.

“With these two comforts, I’m always going to be alright. I’m not an expert yogi but I do enjoy it.

“Although I’m not at the mat every morning because the call times are pretty brutal.

“If I’m needed to be at work at six, with all the will in the world I don’t think I’ll get a practise in before then but I do try.”

The second season of All Creatures Great and Small made its debut in September 2021 and it saw James turn down a prestigious role in Glasgow so he could stay with his love interest, Helen.

At the end of season two, he finally plucked up the courage to propose to her and the pair celebrated their engagement.

The latest season also touched on the impending Second World War, and fans are wondering how this will impact the lives of the Darrowby residents.

All Creatures Great and Small is available to watch on My5.
