Hollington Drive has been airing on ITV and the fourth instalment marks the season finale. Viewers have seen sisters Theresa (played by Anna Maxwell Martin) and Helen (Rachael Stirling) attempt to dig themselves out of trouble after they botched a police investigation. The TV show’s creator, Sophie Petzal, spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk about the ending.

Hollington Drive has kept viewers questioning who was responsible for the disappearance of schoolboy Alex.

The final instalment of the four-part drama will see young Eva (Amelie Bea Smith) reveal more information about the day’s leading up to the schoolboy’s disappearance.

Theresa may finally uncover the truth about what happened, or it could remain a mystery hanging over the residents of Hollington Drive forever.

Writer Sophie Petzal opened up about what fans can expect from the final episode and what she hoped to achieve.

She said: “The way I like to work is the moment we have a show, the first thing is the ending – where are we going?

“And that’s kind of the first major conversation we have. Not necessarily what the final scene will be but how is this going to end?

“Who done it, why, where? How are we going to get there? So I’m always fairly confident that’s been thought through and there is an ending.

“And whether people are satisfied or like it or not, you can never really guess.

“My hope always is that the entire thing doesn’t ride or die upon you being deeply gratified by having not guessed or some big twist, because you can’t guarantee that.

“So what you really hope is that people take their satisfaction and enjoyment from the resolution of the characters.

“And that the age-old, sort of, surprising yet inevitable that you feel an emotional catharsis at the end.”

She said the main priority was making sure fans were satisfied with the character resolutions in the final episode.

The writer added: “Even if your dad guessed what that final conclusion might be, as long as you come away feeling that these characters have gone on a journey that has a satisfying, thought-provoking ending, that for me is most important.

“Of course you want some big shock twist and of course you hope the ending delights and surprises, but for me, the priority has to be an emotional catharsis.

“Because otherwise the whole thing hinges on your clever plot and we all live on the internet these days.

“We are all able to theorise and come to conclusions a lot more quickly and accessibly than we used to.

“You are never going to pass that test 100 per cent. So I do hope so, I hope people are thrilled and thought-provoked.

“But as long as there’s that cathartic satisfying character resolution, I’m happy.”

Ahead of the show’s release, actress Maxwell Martin defended the series, saying it was not another “cookie-cutter drama”.

She said: “I think it’s important to understand in Sophie’s writing and what Carolina brings to it in terms of her directing that it is much more nuanced than that.

“And it’s really exciting to be part of something like that, not a cookie-cutter ‘oh god another child goes missing’ drama, which this is not.”

Viewers have been taking to Twitter to share their thoughts on the series so far and it has received mixed reviews.

Sarah Dalton said: “Oh we’ve loved its twisted and intermingled storylines!! No viewers were harmed in the writing of this drama! #HollingtonDrive”

Jem added: “Omg just realized it’s the final hollington drive tonight! Cannot wait!!!!! #HollingtonDrive”

Whereas Peter Horner commented: “I’m struggling to think of anything more boring than #HollingtonDrive I’m for once actually pleased there adverts which are more interesting.” [Sic]

Stephen Williams said: “#HollingtonDrive very slow episode 3 but it’s finishing next week so it’s just weird.”

Hollington Drive is available to watch on the ITV Hub.
