Royal editor Russell appeared on Wednesday’s Lorraine to discuss the future of the royals following the death of Queen Elizabeth II and a new era as King Charles III takes the throne. Addressing speculation the brothers’ grief has brought them together following a lengthy rift, Russell disappointed hopeful fans by stating the Prince of Wales and the Duke of Sussex never had a meeting and were unlikely to have arranged time to speak to one another.

Many members of the public hoped Prince William and Harry would end up talking through their problems and reuniting as they came together to mourn their grandmother.

Speculation increased when the brothers and their respective wives, Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton, joined each other at Windsor Castle days after the Queen died.

It was the first time the group had been seen together since the Duke and Duchess of Sussex decided to step down from their royal duties in 2020.

They were seen chatting with members of the public as they observed the flowers and tributes left for the late monarch.

Following reports the brothers have been warring for the past couple of years, many were pleased to see them together and rumours the two would meet and sort through their conflicts were spiralling.

On Wednesday’s Lorraine though, speculation was debunked by royal expert Russell.

“It’s a difficult situation because whenever you look at Harry in the last few days, he looked particularly distraught,” the editor remarked.

“Of course, he’s lost his grandmother and potentially his only ally.

“And as I understand it, there was no meeting between him and William.”

Looking deflated, Lorraine reflected the mood of those hoping for a reunion and replied: “Oh, I thought that they would.”

“It was reported that they just saw each other briefly when their cars passed each other,” Russell explained.

He continued: “It’s a very, very sad situation, but there’s a lot of distrust there.

He’s [Harry] got his book coming out, how much will that destroy relations that are already fractured?

“So again, once the dust has settled – and they are still in the mourning period – I think it’s going to be quite interesting.

“Because we’ve had this outpouring of emotion, haven’t we? Towards the queen, towards the family.”

Harry’s tell-all memoir is due to be released soon, with an exact date yet to be confirmed.

Royal photographer Ian Lloyd recently claimed the Duke of Sussex might “dump his book deal” in light of the Queen’s death.

Speaking on GB News, he said: “It’s great, he’s back with the family. And I was wondering what was going through his mind.”

Stephen Dixon commented: “I think it might get ditched, you know,” as Ian agreed: “I think it could do.

“He’s back on board with the Royal Family, wearing the uniform and everything.”

Lorraine airs weekdays from 9am on ITV.
